Chapter 11

The next morning, I awoke to Sterling nuzzling my face and purring. The combination of his soft fur and rumbling greeting filled me with warmth. I could get used to waking up like this. Except my rental didn’t allow pets. Maybe I could hide him until I found a pet-friendly place.

“Good, you’re awake,” he said when I opened my eyes. “I was going to give you about thirty more seconds before I started using my claws. I’m starving.”

Or maybe I’d stay at my current place after all.

“First, I doubt you’re starving,” I said, sitting up. “And second, if you’re so hungry, why not go downstairs and ask Nan for something to eat?”

“We weren’t properly introduced.”

I blinked. “What?”

He sighed as if I was being difficult. “I can’t possibly be so forward with a woman I’ve never been properly introduced to. That would reduce her to the level of peasant, and I’m sure you don’t want that lack of respect aimed at your grandmother.”

Given my grandmother’s general lack of respect for me and my life choices, I didn’t particularly care if she didn’t receive the proper recognition from a talking cat, but the situation seemed to matter to Sterling. I groaned. “Fine. Give me a minute to get dressed and brush my teeth, and we’ll head to the kitchen.”

Everything in Nan’s cottage remained exactly as I remembered it, like the whole place had been frozen in time. The cozy blue and gold comforter, the blue flowers stenciled on the dresser drawers—everything was the same.

Even the contents within the drawer hadn’t changed. This was always my room when I visited, and eighteen-year-old me had stashed several changes of clothes here. I selected a pair of charcoal shorts and a loose, powder blue tee-shirt, smiling as I pulled them on. It was funny. I specifically remembered storing these clothes here because my mom chose them and I thought they weren’t stylish enough. Now, they were something I might have chosen myself.

The kitchen was already humming with activity by the time Sterling and I made our way to it. Nan kept watch over the griddle pan as a spatula flipped pancakes without her interference. To my surprise, Cress was awake and sitting at the island, a clear plastic box open in front of her. When we were growing up, she was notoriously difficult to wake before ten in the morning. Part of me worried I’d have to pry her out of bed to get to town at a decent hour.

Sterling, who balanced on my shoulder as I walked through the sitting room, jumped onto an empty stool when I reached the island. As soon as I sat in the space between him and Cress, he cleared his throat and nodded toward Nan.

“Oh, yeah.” I looked at my grandmother. “Nan, Sterling reminded me this morning that you two haven’t been properly introduced. This is Sterling Overton-Collingsworth, of the Xumbraith Collingsworths.”

Nan crossed to the island and nodded seriously. “A pleasure. And I am Beatrice Evanora Bigsby, of the Moonglow Hollow Bigsbys.
