“I don't wanna fuck you. You can't even sing.”

“Turn it up!”

“You had to sing or something to get some pussy.”

“What do you know about ODB?”

“Man, come on. Turn it up!”

“Were these kids even alive when this song came out?”

Next to me in a chair on the grass, facing the same boys and girls who aren't actually that much younger than us, Sonny shakes his head.

Lamping under the stars while gritty, headnodic beats flow with the nighttime breeze, I sip Sailor from a glass. Patio light and downtown Baltimore's glow illuminate the twenty or so people dancing on the other side of the pool. I was hesitant about having a crowd in my backyard, but my only reason to be sways easily and smiles brightly across from me, like this is exactly what she ran away for.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't like it.

As she heads inside with Lyd and an empty cup, I turn to my boy, whose girl is next to him.

He hasn't seen or heard from Moscow either, not since Violet showed up in D.C. last night.

No news is good news, right?

I take another drink.

More people show as the night rolls on. Mostly Lyd's friends, but a few of mine too, thanks to Sonny. Solo and Banks, Mal and the boys, Ev and his girl, and an already open bottle of red wine, all meet my charge.

But just like with Esther, and Lyd, she's Lamb to all of them.

And she fits right in with my sweats rolled down and my shirt knotted up, barely baring the bottom of her belly and the tops of her hips while she follows rhythm with her whole body.

Under the music, Sonny says something else, but I can't concentrate, because across the yard and lined in city nightlights, this girl steals glances under her lashes. She knows I'm looking. She's letting me see, but it's affecting me on levels I don't think she realizes.

Sonny's talking, but the music, him, and reality hanging in wait are all just background.

Lamb's bottom lip and low-lidded look are all that's clear in this haze.

Dipping with a drop in the beat, all that's in focus for me pushes her hair back, holding it up off her neck with one hand. She tilts her head, lost in the hook and riding it with eyes closed like she's made of music. Like music's her lover, moving inside her.

My heart beats and my head spins, and I shift in my seat because I feel it.

My whole body knows this song.

Next to me, Sonny laughs. I look over, and he shakes his head like he saw what I saw. Like he saw me see it.

“Aww,” he kids, meeting my eyes, “What, are you soft on her?”

Nothing about any of this feels soft.

Still shaking his head, he laughs some more, but lower now. “That's fucked-up, man.”

Instinct and protection-heavy hips all but ache.

“Yeah,” I agree, taking another drink.

Lighthearted commotion on the other side of the pool reclaims my attention, and my pulse knots tightly when I look over and don't see her for a beat.
