I awoke to a clanging noise. With no windows, I couldnât tell if it was day or night. I raised my head and saw an officer rap the bars with his nightstick.
âYou got a visitor,â he said with a twisted smile.
I rubbed the sleep from my good eye and raked my hands back through my hair. âLet me guess. Long black hair, green eyes. A real looker.â My eyes met his.
He raised an envious eyebrow. âThatâs her.â
âTell her Iâm not home.â
âYouâre kidding.â
I stood and glared. âDo I look like Iâm kidding?â
He studied me for a moment, then scratched his head. âThat all adds up to zero to me.â He turned to leave.
âIâd like to make a phone call.â
âWhat?â he said with his hand on the doorknob.
âI didnât get my phone call last night.â
âIâll see what I can do.â
He returned ten minutes later without a phone. âYou have another visitor. Says sheâs your mama.â
I stood. âIâll see her.â
He unlocked the cage and led me to a small, windowless room that looked a lot like the interrogation room where Iâd spent a lifetime last night. I sat in one of the two chairs and rested my elbows on the table between them. A camera watched me from the ceiling.
An officer opened the door and let Mama in. âDillon. What happened?â She hurried to the table and sat down.
âA few of Bradleyâs finest tuned me up on the way to the station.â
âYou look terrible.â
âYou should see the other three guys.â I tried to smile.
âThatâs not right. They canât do that.â
âIâm afraid they can do pretty much whatever they want.â
She reached for my hand.
A warning came from a speaker on the ceiling. âPlease do not touch the prisoner. Physical contact is prohibited.â
Mama looked around the room. I pointed to the camera.
âHow long will they keep you?â
I leaned forward and lowered my voice. âCall Bill McCutchen and let him know that Iâm here. I might need him to bail me out.â I leaned back. âAnd I need to talk to Mort ASAP. My arraignment is tomorrow morning.â
Mama nodded. âI saw Nicole outside. Did she visit you?â
âShe tried.â I leaned forward again. âI donât want to talk about her. Sheâs the reason Iâm in here.â
âWhat?â Her eyes widened. âSheâs the one who called to tell me you were in trouble.â
She would know. âI said I donât want to talk about it. You need to stay away from her. Sheâs poison.â
Mamaâs expression gave no indication whether she would heed my warning.
