We followed Honeybeeâs distinctive howl. We couldnât see her, but her yipping and barking kept us on the right track.
âI wonder if this whole custard thing could be a publicity stunt,â Minnie said, casually dropping a completely new idea at my feet.
Instead of tripping over it, I stopped and stared at her.
âThink about it.â She spread her hands wide as if unfurling a banner. âIntrigue and curiosity lands straight on the Dining With Daisy food prep island. Who doesnât like that kind of drama especially when no one gets hurt?â
Sheâd caught me completely by surprise. I let the idea settle before I answered. âItâs kind of risky if you want my opinion. Sure, now we know that no one got hurt but it could have ended differently. Whoâd get behind a scheme that could have gone horribly wrong?â
Someone trying to get ahead? Someone unhappy with the current situation? Someone jealous of Daisyâs success?
I listened for Honeybeeâs howl and Marleyâs unmistakable snuffling. Nothing, so we continued along the trail. âItâs the same players involved in either case, right? Only someone involved with Daisyâs business would want to bring that kind of attention,â I said.
âOr, someone in a power play so weâre right back to the beginning with Abby still in the mix,â Minnie said. She kicked a rock off the trail. Iâd like to kick this whole problem out of my life, but it wasnât that easy.
We walked in silence for a few minutes. Then Honeybeeâs howling intensified and veered off the trail, heading deeper into the woods.
âWhat should we do now?â Minnie asked. âWait here until they come back?â
I looked at the dense growth of mountain laurel off the trail. âHoneybee is my responsibility. I have to keep going, but you can wait here if you want.â
Minnie looked at me like Iâd sprouted another head. âYou arenât leaving me behind, Ellie. If weâre walking into danger, two is better than one,â she said, expressing my own fear that Iâd hoped to pretend didnât exist.
I cupped my hand around my ear. âIt sounds like theyâve stopped. Maybe that means they found what they were trailing. Letâs go.â
I led the way, pushing branches aside, and stepping over old moss covered tree stumps.
Honeybee began howling so loud, I felt like I could reach out and grab her. âI think weâre getting close,â I said, hoping I was right. I stepped through a thick tangle of mountain laurel into a small clearing. Right in the middle was a cabin, or the sorry remnants of one. The three dogs were barking at the door like theyâd trapped some varmint.
The cabin, from my perspective, had seen better days. The few windows that had once graced the front were now boarded over and the front door was askew. If something was inside, I sure hoped it wasnât a skunk.
Minnie squeezed my arm. âYou donât plan on going in, do you?â
I hadnât actually planned that far ahead. I was just glad to find the dogs. This structure was as unexpected as stumbling upon an old trunk washed up on the beach.
