Chapter Twenty-One

As everyone settled in, Layla and I headed out to the other elven spires where I’d encountered Aelfrich. He’d insisted that Layla be kept hidden from the loyalists, so she pulled her parka over her head and wrapped a scarf around her face.

I knocked on the spire. No answer. I didn’t dare check the other ones. The last thing I needed was to start a fight. The whole area looked like a ghost town. Almost like when I’d visited the original royal quarter in New Albion, where I’d met Echor.

“How weird,” I said.

“Where could they have gone?” Layla asked.

I shrugged. “I doubt they went far. I could always fly up and try to get a bird’s eye view. If they’re anywhere nearby, I’d surely see them. What’s strange, though, is that every one of the elves is gone. The revolutionaries and loyalists alike.”

“My father had to have something to do with it.”

“I don’t know, Layla. He doesn’t have fairy power. Could he create a portal and take all the elves away?”

Layla shook her head. “I don’t think so. Unless you think Trixie…”

“She wouldn’t be in league with him. She couldn't be. She defeated the other fairies and had them locked away.”

“I know, Caspar. I’m not saying that’s what happened. She and her fairies know better than anyone how terrifying my father can be. The Seelie fairies came from New Albion. But what if they captured her? She and the rest of the fairies left with Targigoth.”

I snorted. “None of this fits. There has to be a reason why Trixie and Targigoth didn’t tell us what they were up to. But they wouldn’t betray us. Those are the last two who would ever have reason to side with your father.”

“Fly away, junior birdman,” Layla said. “I guess looking around can’t hurt.”

I bit my lip. “Junior birdman?”

“Fly away, upside-down!”

“How do you even know that song?” I asked. “We used to sing it in the Scouts.”

Layla shrugged. “Weird, the things I’ve picked up here or there studying human culture.”

I chuckled, gathered aether and air, and extending my arms in front of me, I shot into the sky.

I flew all around, circling the whole glacier. I didn’t see a single living soul other than a walrus, a group of seals, and several flocks of seabirds.

I was just about to give up and fly back to Layla when I noticed a small circle. I descended and landed in the middle of it. Ten stones, breaking through the ice. They looked similar to the ones that Elrand had used as a temple near his cabin in the woods. There was some magic about them, a warmth that suggested that they’d been used recently. I recognized each of the elements latent in each of the five stones, respectively. But I didn’t know how to reverse-engineer whatever magic had been done to figure it out. If anyone knew, it would be Elrand.

I flew back to Layla and told her what I’d seen, and we went and retrieved Elrand from the spire.
