When the phone rings and you determine someone is calling you about purchasing a puppy, you should have several things in mind to accomplish:

1. You want to come across well over the phone and sound friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.

2. You want to determine whether the person is a good candidate to purchase a puppy.

3. You want to convince the prospective buyer that your dogs are the best.

Before you begin to talk with someone on the telephone, smile! Smiles come through on the telephone. Believe it or not, they do. There is a special tone in the voice of a caller who is physically smiling. Take time with the caller. Do not rush them. You can always heat up your dinner later or cook dinner a few minutes later than usual. You need to give them your undivided attention. Your family needs to understand you are not to be interrupted on business calls unless it is a real emergency. Remember that the caller has called at a convenient time for them, and they may have a list of breeders to call. This is your opportunity to make a good impression on them.

Prepare a cheat sheet to use for incoming puppy inquires. Use one for every call about a puppy purchase, and file it once it’s completed. A cheat sheet should include this information:
