‘No deals!’ snarled Redfern.

‘You. .you idiot!’ the Doctor cried, shaking with rage. ‘I was trying to save Zoe’s life!’

‘How? By offering yourself up to them? What good would that do?’

‘More good than your threats. If I’d left it to you, my friend would be dead by now. She might well be, for all you know.’

‘So, you think you can ask the Sharks nicely and they won’t hurt her?’

The Doctor looked uncertain. ‘It...it was all I could think of, at the time.’

‘There’s only one way to deal with Selachians, Doctor.’

‘Oh? And have you tried any others?’

‘I’m in charge of this mission,’ Redfern barked, ‘and I won’t let you go down there!’

‘You really are the most illogical and obstinate man...’

Redfern leapt to his feet and towered over the Doctor. ‘This is the second time I’ve had to stop you from going to the Sharks.

I think you might be a spy, after all!’

‘We weren’t exchanging pleasantries, you know!’

‘But the Supreme Leader recognised you. Everything else could have been an act.’

As Redfern and the Doctor glared at each other, Mulholland stepped forward. Redfern had almost forgotten about her. She had been hovering by the door, quietly watching.

‘What about the hostages?’ she asked.

Redfern didn’t take his eyes off the Doctor. ‘What about them?’ he returned evenly. ‘We can’t be sure they exist.’

‘Oh, for goodness’ sake!’ the Doctor exploded.

‘We have only the Sharks’ word for it.’

‘And mine – I warned you about this days ago!’

‘Yes, Doctor, you did. And exactly how did you know about the Selachians’ claims before they made them?’

The Doctor’s eyes narrowed. ‘You want to use the G-bomb, don’t you?’

‘Answer my question!’

‘Oh yes,’ said the Doctor scornfully, ‘you’re itching to input those activation codes, to prove your power, to go down in history. To commit genocide. You don’t believe in human hostages – what about Ockoran civilians?’
