Kara and Vogel were studying production forecasts and other management matters when, without warning, an angry Davros appeared on the holographic screen.

Kara, as ever, maintained a smooth composure. ‘It’s always an enormous pleasure to speak to you, Great Healer. In fact, only a minute ago Vogel was offering thanks to your name for such inspired production estimates.’

‘Indeed,’ echoed Vogel, ‘an inspiration, your pulchritudinous—’

‘There are more important things to consider,’ Davros flared indignantly. ‘A Dalek patrol has been attacked.’

‘Outrageous,’ exclaimed Vogel. ‘An insult to your very dignity.’

‘I believe assassins are attempting to infiltrate my base. It concerns me that those who are trying to kill me might also try the same with you.’

Kara remained calm. ‘Oh, I have every faith in my guards. A fine body of men,’ she said blissfully. ‘I personally selected each and every one of them.’

Davros was unimpressed. ‘Experience has taught me humanoid life forms are susceptible to bribery. I would therefore prefer you were protected by those incapable of corruption.’

Kara continued to hold her nerve. ‘You can only mean Daleks, Great Healer.’

‘I have already despatched a squad for your protection.’

‘You are unbelievably kind,’ Kara said, going excessively over-the-top. ‘Thank you for your thought and consideration.’

The Great Healer’s face vanished from the screen.

Kara and Vogel exchanged an awkward glance.

‘I think he guesses, madam.’

Kara snapped back. ‘He can guess what he wants. He won’t live to learn whether he was right.’

Concerned that Kara was underestimating Davros’s aggressive disposition, alarm bells sounded in Vogel’s head. ‘I fear, madam, that you may be placing too much trust in Orcini.’

‘He will succeed,’ Kara insisted. ‘And when he does,’ her tone was becoming more rhetorical, ‘not only will I be rid of that troublesome Davros, but I will control the food supply for the whole galaxy!’
