CHELSEA

After refilling my water bottle in the staff room, I take a big drink from my flask. Four hours today in one surgery, and I’m feeling dehydrated and my legs are aching. Perhaps it’s exhaustion from what we got up to last night.

The surgery was more difficult than we envisioned. Each time Cameron would remove a little more of the patient’s damaged spleen, he’d start bleeding again, and we’d spend quite a bit of time cauterizing the vessels. It was definitely the most challenging surgery this week so far.

Standing in front of the large whiteboard near our staff room, I look at all the operations scheduled for tomorrow and notice Cameron only has one surgery in the middle of the afternoon.

My brows knit together.

That can’t be right.

Dena, one of the new interns, walks by before turning back and standing next to me. I twist my head and give her a polite smile. She’s a sweet intern but does get a little in your face from time to time. She’d get along so well with Ava as they both love idle gossip.

“It must be so awesome to see your name on the board, Dr. Mitchell.” She beams.

“Yes, it is.”

“Oh, but you’re only on there with Dr. Chase once tomorrow. That can’t be right.”

“That’s what I was just thinking, Dena.”

“Maybe it’s because Dr. Chase turned down Dr. Atkins. She’s apparently got it real bad for him.”

“What?” I unintentionally boom.

Dena’s eyes widen, and she purses her lips together. “Sorry, Dr. Mitchell. I shouldn’t gossip, but I heard it from another intern, Marcel.”

Good going, Chelsea, let’s make it obvious that you’re jealous by some stupid rumor. It’s only been two weeks of being officially together, and I’m already acting like some bitter schoolgirl.

Turning away, I begin my search for Cameron. Luckily, I don’t have to look for very long when I find him in the locker room.

“Cam,” I whisper as I walk right up beside him.

He closes his locker before facing me, his lips pulling into a smirk. Cameron looks left and right before placing a hasty kiss on my cheek.

“Hey,” he replies.

“What happened to not doing that here?” I mutter.

“Couldn’t help it. Your legs all right now?” he asks.

“Yeah, they’re fine,” I answer as I tuck a few fly-away hairs behind my ear. “Did you know you’re only scheduled for one surgery tomorrow?”

“One?” he repeats “That can’t be right. I’m sure I had at least two. One morning and one afternoon.”

“Well, only the afternoon one is up there now.”

“It’s fine, Chelsea. I probably got bumped for an emergency. It happens.”

“I understand, but we wouldn’t know the emergencies yet.”

“True.”

“Could it be that she knows about us and is jealous?”

“She can’t possibly know.”

“Then what?” I ask.

Cameron looks at me and shrugs his shoulders before pursing his lips together.

“Hmm… all right. Come on, we’ll go have a look at the board.”

Following him back down the corridor, we both stand in front of the board and try to work out what’s happened.

“Elizabeth,” he mutters before pointing to where his name was scheduled on the board.
