Over the bridge and up the hill, very near to where I was staying, a big box store that specialized in practical winter gear provided me with a pair of stylish-looking lace-up boots with buffalo leather uppers and insulated insides and soles that looked like they could equal Alison’s snow tires when it came to traction.

And down the aisle we found a proper arctic down-filled parka, with a fur-lined hood and a storm flap and an activity rating of -40°C.

My new winter wardrobe was completed by three pairs of heavy duty thermal socks.

“Need a bag?” the clerk asked at the checkout.

“He’ll wear them,” Alison replied.
