In the 1800s, Fray Peyri allowed smaller sister missions called asistencias, as well as villages called rancherias, to be built on grassland a few miles away. Built by and for the neophytes, they held livestock, had their own churches, and were operated by other friars. One of San Luis Rey de Francia's asistencias still exists today. It is called the Pala Mission and still serves the local Native community. After converting to Christianity, some Luisenos stayed at the mission, while others returned to their villages. The villages eventually became rancherias full of converted Native people.
