finishing the mission
As the mission's neophyte population grew to its peak (832 inhabitants) in the early 1800s, so did the mission complex. Construction ended in 1819, at which time the mission had expanded to contain monjerios, or dormitories, for single neophyte girls and women; soldiers' barracks, storerooms, workrooms, mills, a granary, a hospital, and houses for the neophytes. It also included miles of aqueducts, which supplied water to the community and gardens; outlying ranchos, or farms; and two asistencias, or branch missions. The main church structure was completed in 1793.
