âSo how long are we going to watch this guy for?â Weâd been sitting in a sedan outside a townhouse for hours. I was hungry. Again.
âUntil the time is right. Donât worry.â Esau flashed one of his borderline feral smiles at me. âIâll buy you a beer later.â
âDamn right.â I shrugged out of my new wool coat, a necessary purchase once weâd landed in Chicago. Who the fuck would chose to live in such a damn cold city?
âYouâre going to get cold,â Esau said. Who was he? My father?
âSo turn on the heat.â I bunched the jacket up, shoved it between my seat and the door, and leaned back against it. Another smile played over his lips when I propped my feet up on the dash.
âWhy did you ditch the Gucci?â
âLoafers arenât my style.â
âAnd Converse are?â
âTheyâre gray. Isnât that sedate enough for you?â
âVery respectable,â he indulged me.
âGood. Now shut up. Iâm going to sleep.â Surprisingly, he did as I asked.
I was only out for fifteen minutes before Esau nudged me awake. I opened my gritty eyes, but didnât move another muscle.
âHeâs moving.â Following Esauâs gaze, I saw a big muscley-looking dude exit the building.
âThatâs Daniels?â
Esau nodded. âYou understand the plan?â
âYep, I got it.â
I got out of the car and took off after Daniels. Behind me, Esau started the car and flipped it the other direction. Daniels rounded the corner. By the time I caught up to him, Esauâs headlights were visible at the other end of the block. I took the gun given to me a few hours earlier by Esauâs contact and pressed it to the back of Danielsâ neck.
âDonât move.â I kept my voice low.
He froze. âMy wallet is in my coat pocket.â Slowly, he lifted a hand to open the jacket.
âHands up. I donât want your wallet.â Nor did I want him to pull a gun. Which was what he was going for because I could see the outline of his wallet in his jeans. Next to us, Esauâs car stopped. He came around and stood in front of Daniels.
âEsau,â Daniels said. He tried to take a step back, but I shoved him forward with the gun barrel. âLook, man, I dunno whatâs going on, but we donât need to do this.â The white clouds of his rapid breath filled the air.
Esau smiled. It looked genuine.
âDonât worry, Russ.â He waved a hand at me. âIâm sorry for the thug.â I was the thug? âBut somethingâs going down. I need your help with it.â
âMy help?â
âYes.â He locked eyes with me. âFor Godâs sake, Cooper, put the gun down.â I did, but stayed close in case he ran. âWe have an internal problem. I need guys I trust.â
âWhy didnât you just call me?â
âToo risky.â Esau glanced around and leaned close conspiratorially. âDonât look around, but weâre being watched. I want them to think Iâm pinning it on you. Theyâll loosen up and then weâll make our move.â
Daniels visibly relaxed as he fell for Esauâs story.
âWhat do you need me to do?â
âI know itâs a lot to ask.
