Chapter Fourteen
Kate walked back to the car while Zane gave his last condolences to Tanya, and told her to call Bryceâs number if she wanted to go see Allie at the morgue. Just before opening the door, Kate remembered something, then turned and jogged back up the walk just as Zane stepped onto the porch.
âMrs. Miller, I have one more question. When we were looking for Allie in relation to her vandalizing Jonahâs car, we stopped by her place. Your son answered the door and got a little defensive. He said it was his property, not Allieâs. Did you say the duplex belonged to your dad?â
âIt does. Itâs the one my ex-husband tried to get me to sell. It wasnât even mine to sell at the time, but I had power of attorney. My dad isnât in his right mind now, and I donât know what his will says, but he still owns it. Funny David would say it was his.â She held her hand on the door, her face drained. Kate knew sheâd break down as soon as they left.
âStrange,â Kate agreed.
Tanya stepped onto the porch. âWait a minute. The director of the nursing home said thereâd been a commotion the morning my dad walked out of the facility. David used to work in the kitchen. It agitated my dad for him to be there. Things finally settled down when David got fired. I wonder if David had been badgering my dad when he worked there? I wonder if David went to pick up his final paycheck this weekend?â
Zane jotted in his notepad.
Kate said, âWe will definitely look into it. Laura said David and Allie tended to fight a lot. Is that true?â
Tanya smiled, like she could see the memory in her head. âSince Allie was old enough to walk. Best friends and worst enemies. But for years, they didnât speak. Allie was so distraught over Davidâs drug use, she even blocked his phone number. Heâd always call wanting money. He badgered me, too. But heâs been clean now for six months, I think. Thatâs why Allie let him move in with her.â
âOkay, thank you. We will chat with David again. And please donât hesitate to call me, even if you just want to talk. So sorry we had to give you this news.â
Tanyaâs facade cracked, and Kate heard her sniff as she closed the door. She imagined the woman slumping down on the other side of the door, crouched and crying until her entire head hurt.
Zaneâs phone rang, as they got back in the car. Kate listened to Zane repeatedly say, âUh huh, okay.â
When he finally disconnected, Kate asked, âWhat was that all about?â
âJake talked to the manager finally. He said that room wasnât rented. The door handle on it is broken, and heâd told maintenance to put a board on the doorframe and nail the door shut until today. Jake said the maintenance crew charges double time on the weekends, and the door was busted on Thursday, but they couldnât get there to fix it.
