CHAPTER SIX

The next morning, Sage was up and out by eight o’clock. Gabby was waiting on her front porch with two travel mugs full of coffee and a small white bag. She climbed into the van and handed Sage her coffee.

“What’s in the bag? Something good?” Sage asked. “I’m starving.”

“My mom made her famous apple fritters and gave me a dozen. Rory ate over half of them last night and I had to hide these, so we had them for this morning,” Gabby replied, reaching into the bag and handing Sage a sticky pastry.

“This is such a treat. I love your mom’s fritters.”

“She doesn’t make them very often anymore. And when she does, I have to hide them or I wouldn’t get any,” Gabby said, laughing.

“First stop is my mom’s shop to pick up the truck and then right to the storage facility. I don’t want to leave Cliff alone any longer than I have to. When we are done there I can drop you off at your house or you can come see the new house and help unload the truck. I can drop you off when I bring the truck back to This and That.”

“I told the girls I would be gone for only a few hours. I’ll have to get back to work so I hope it’s all right if you drop me off after we empty the unit,” Gabby replied, licking her fingers.

“That’s fine. I appreciate all the help you are giving me this morning.”

“It will be nice to see your mom again. I haven’t seen her much recently.”

“I know, it seems like everyone’s been busy with their own life so much, we haven’t been able to meet up, even for supper. We need to set a night once every couple of weeks to get together,” Sage said, pulling into the parking lot at This and That.

“Sounds good to me. Do you like the house Cliff bought? I remember when I was a little girl, my mom and I visited there one day to deliver some flowers that had been delivered to my mom by accident. From what I remember, the lady who met us at the door was nice, but we never entered the house,” Gabby said.

“It’s amazing and it’s hiding many secrets.”

“Only you would be involved in a place like that,” Gabby replied, shaking her head. “Does it mean you are going to live there after you get married?”

“I really think so,” Sage answered, smiling. “We haven’t discussed in detail what to do with my house yet. We will either rent it for extra income since there is no mortgage or sell it outright.”

“There’s a lot of families in Cupston that are looking for reasonable rentals. I don’t think you’d have any problem at all renting it out,” Gabby said. “I can think of three families off-hand that are looking.”

“It’s not going to be in the near future, at least I don’t think it will be.”

“It doesn’t matter. People are trying to move to Cupston because of how much Moosehead has grown.
