Carlos took the dog with him. In full daylight there was no sign of the light from last night, but the dog was restless still, ears pricked and straining against the leash.

The hill was steeper than Carlos remembered and he stopped often to get his breath. The dog was slowing down too, the climb difficult on stiff legs. Carlos couldn’t remember how many years it had been since they last climbed the mountain together.

At the top the dog hurtled to the edge of the crater, ears pricked and twitching, letting out a menacing growl. If it weren’t for the light, he would have put it down to some animal coming to grief, but what was up here for any animal? No water. No shelter. And one thing he was sure of, animals didn’t wander about the place carrying lights.
