Diesel
What he was trying to find at the bottom of a bottle he didnât know. It certainly wasnât his damn dignity. He hadnât told the others yet. Hadnât told Ares. He knew how he would take the news which was probably why he was drowning himself in booze. He hated lying to his family, but he couldnât tell them Chris was a cop. Some of the guys wouldnât take that very well and he just couldnât risk⦠he couldnât let them do something stupid.
His fingers tightened on the leather lying in his lap.
Someone slid onto the barstool next to his.
âIs this where you say youâre fine and I say youâre not, but Iâve got you?â
He turned his head and looked up at a too-fucking-smug looking Texas.
âNo,â he said and brought the bottle to his lips and took a big gulp of beer.
âWhat happened?â Tex asked, sounding so damned genuine it made Diesel grind his teeth.
Lying wasnât exactly new to him, but it got harder the more you loved the people you were lying to.
âChris happened,â he muttered under his breath.
âDid he break up with you?â
He snapped his head up, staring at Texas with confusion.
âWhat?â Tex shrugged. âWe all know youâve been doing the horizontal mambo.â
âI thought it was tango?â Roadkill said, appearing behind Texas.
âWhat are you? Middle schoolers?â Griff asked with a shake of his head. âWhat Tex meant to say is that we all know youâve been fucking, and no, I didnât say anything. You two have just been giving off some major âweâve been fuckingâ vibes.â
âThat,â Texas said with a nod. âBut where even is he? Heâs supposed to be here right now, isnât he?â
âHeâs gone,â Diesel said. He squeezed the leather once again before putting it up on the bar. It smelled as much of leather as it smelled of Chrisâ cologne.
âChris left us?â Jace asked.
He heard the surprise in Jaceâs voice, and he could imagine the shock on everyoneâs faces, but he was stuck staring at Chrisâ cut. The promise Chris had made to the club before putting it on for the first time had been nothing but a lie.
A hand on his shoulder had him looking up. Ares was there, a sympathetic look in his eyes.
âI think we need to talk,â Ares said.
Diesel gave him a nod, then slid off his stool and followed Ares upstairs. They walked into Aresâ bedroom and the second the door was closed behind them, Ares rounded on him.
âWhy the hell havenât you told me he left? What happened? Is this part of why youâve been all weird for a while?â
Diesel dropped his head forward with a sigh. He ran his fingers through his hair and when he looked up at Ares, he knew he needed to be honest with his friend.
âIt is,â he answered.
Ares crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. âWhat happened?â
He swallowed hard against the thick lump in his throat and sat down on the bed.
âI need you to promise that youâll keep this between us,â he said, swallowing against the lump in his throat.
