THIS PLACE IS LIKE a maze. Rae felt like she hadn’t even scratched the surface of the size of it.

Zara had left her with Dil and flitted off to wherever it was she went. Dil was in an emerald velvet suit and purple bow tie. She would have never put those two colours together, but he made it work.

‘Come on, lovely.’ He made a sweeping gesture toward the room in front of them.

It was the most jarring experience—when she stepped through the doorway, she felt like she’d left the 1600s and arrived in the modern world. The walls were the crispest white and all the furniture was metal and cold. Sterile was the word that came to mind. There were wires and gadgets all over the place.

In the centre of the room was a white padded recliner chair, like those ones you’d see in a dentist’s office.

Dil’s outfit stood out even more in this environment but took on a garish feel. Rae went to sit in the recliner.

Dil chuckled. ‘How about you take a seat here beside me first? We’ll save that one for later.’

Thank God. Rae was intimidated by the helmet-looking thing suspended above the recliner. She pulled out a metal chair, its legs scraping on the ground. She winced.

‘These things are the darndest, aren’t they?’ Dil said, dragging his own chair out.

‘What’s the process?’ Rae didn’t know if she wanted the answer. She sat razor-straight on the edge of her seat.

Dil patted her hand. ‘Relax, my dear. This won’t hurt. It’s just some simple techniques first up to see if you are sensing anything more than a normal person does.’

Even though Rae didn’t relax one bit, she relaxed her stance to make Dil feel like she had.

He was right, however—the first few exercises were fine. Dil looked at a card and asked her to shut her eyes and tell him what he was looking at.

‘Um, a blank bit of paper?’

Dil shook his head. ‘Try to visualise yourself from my position, as if you were looking at the card. Clear your mind of everything and just say what pops into your head.’

She did as he said... well, tried to. Clearing her mind was harder than she’d thought. The more she tried, the less clear it was.

‘Banana?’

Dil didn’t tell her if she got it right or not but continued picking up cards and asking her to try again. This went on for ages. There were no clocks in the room and Rae was itching to reach into her pocket and check her phone.

‘Okay, enough of that, let’s move on.’ Dil made it seem like he was satisfied to stop there, but in reality, he had run out of cards.

‘I have hidden a marble in the room next door. This is a two-way mirror. In a minute, I am going to flick this switch,’ he pointed to one on the wall, ‘and when I do, you will be able to see into the room. I want you to tell me where you think it’s hidden.
