Kaycee called down to the cellar through the styrofoam cup from her side of the street to let them know that the proverbial coast was clear. I waited some before heading down, the other two in tow as we navigated the less-than-sturdy stairwell down.
âShe still in a coma?â
Xander nodded, though Donovan felt the need to make some kind of pointless correction for accuracyâs sake. It was annoying, and reminded me of myself.
âSheâs in a hibernative state to rehabilitate from her wounds, a magical failsafe to ensure her survival.â
âOh,â I said. âSo a coma.â
I cut Donovan off before he had enough air in his lungs to sound off on some more nonsense.
Seriously, I must be so annoying.
âIâve got to stand in for Gale tonight. Sheâs being formally charged or something. Both the House of Unet and the Masarou Tribe are going to be there, so we got the whole cast and crew.â
If I hadnât seen it myself, I would say the look exchanged by the Tinkerer and Doorman was scripted. Hackles up, concern in thickets, and an eye toward the respectfully wrapped yet still comatose Gale.
âBad? On a scale from one toââ
âWhatever smartass thing youâre going to use as worst case scenario, that one.â Xanderâs gruff voice was shaken, whether from fear or fatigue was hard to say, but they were each equally disturbing.
âThis is new for them; got it. Well,â I said, sighing out more than just airâI felt my shoulders sink. It was the death rattle of my resolve. âHow do we do this?â
âI can go with you, but thatâs it.â The Tinkerer stood, the trinket heâd shown me earlier carefully tucked beneath the collar of his shirt. âYouâre her stand-in, so I can represent you.â
âAnd us?â The Monkâs voice startled me, having forgotten the brick-breaking karate-kid was right behind me.
âWeâll talk when we go across the street. We still have to deal with Sam.â
The silence was deafening, and the befuddlement that spurred it came from the name Iâd given her. Grove could have helped, but he was directly behind me so as to see what the two beside Gale would say. He probably had a good guess as to what I was going to say. Sarcastic tidbit, piece of actual information, self-deprecating zinger, and so on. I decided if I didnât die, I was going to go out and try to get some depth and new material.
âThe Stalker, guys, her name is Sam. We have to deal with her, sheâs the only source I can think of. I mean, itâs obvious as hell, but maybe they just banked on me being an idiot.â
âItâs pretty sure-fire.â Xander snorted entirely without mirth, his shoulders slung as low as mine had been when the gravity of this all had first settled on me.
âYouâre a bad checker player about to try your hand at chess against the masters of the game,â Donovan said coolly.
âOut of my depth, Don, just say⦠Out of your depth. Itâs a wonder this thing didnât just kill her.
