Chapter 25
Kellan
Brook flipped over restlessly, making noises in her sleep. The nightmares started after the first trial. They weren't on the level of mine where she may hurt someone. But whoever was with her tried to soothe her. This one was terrible, worse than any of the others. With each of her restless movements, I could feel myself being weighed down. My throat ached as I held myself back from trying to comfort her.
"No!" She struck out with her fist. Her other hand opens flat and starts to glow.
I stood up from the chair and moved quickly to the bedside. I couldn't handle it anymore. I was familiar with night terrors.
"Should I wake her?" Caspian looked up at me.
"No, she may get stuck in the dream and not realize it is us. Sooth her," I commanded. I wasn't sure why I was holding myself back.
Caspian continued to rub her stomach and whisper random sounds. "It isn't working."
I hesitantly reached out to push her hair from her face. She calmed almost immediately. When I drew back, she started to struggle again.
"Touch her again."
I reached out and ran my hand down her arm, and she sighed.
"You need to get into bed. Your touch is calming her nightmares," Caspian said.
There was enough room on her other side for me. She usually would have Lumi on her other side, but Lumi and Auberon had needed to appear at the nightly party, so their parents didn't get suspicious.
The last trial we had gone through had been on the water. Her wind couldn't help us on the water. Unless we had wanted to make a whirlpool to drown us all. Thankfully, Caspian had a handle on the water. It saw us through that one, but Brook had almost drowned when we were first sent through the portal. She couldn't swim. Fighting for her life had been exhausting, and there was no way she would have made it to the party. So they had gone without us.
I climbed onto the bed. I laid next to Brook, keeping the layer of blankets between us. After facing her, I reached out to her. She seemed to sense me next to her as she curled into me with a sigh. I hesitantly wrapped my arm around her. My pulse raced as I tried to keep my breathing measured.
I didn't do relationships. Letting people in has never been a strong suit for me. Somehow, even with the walls I had built after losing Rissa, she slipped through a crack. Protecting her had become an obsession for me. If we could only figure out that last trial, we could save her from everything that happened. I already had Ivy, Ruki, and Yuri going to the wild woods as a backup. If we are sent through a portal that takes us there, we will need all the help we could get.
She shifted in my arms and buried her head into the crook of my neck. Her rhythmic breathing leveled out, indicating her nightmare had passed.
