He sat on the bed, watching the little white door that she had closed. There was the sound of water hissing into the shower tray, and it was easy to imagine her peeling off those clothes, standing there nude, rinsing away the dust and strain of the journey.
Damn. Think about something else.
It was harder than it sounded. Sam could not get that memory out of his head. Her lips, so soft, round, pressing against his skin. Her slim frame leaning on his back, his arm. Her heart pumping. Fear? Or something else as well?
Was she attracted to him? He was just a beat-up guy fooling himself. This girl was used to the finest of everything. If she did get cleared of this murder, somehow, sheâd be famous, a world celebrity; sheâd be an innocent victim who could have any guy she wanted.
But his blood told him she wanted him.
Maybe she did. But that was natural. This was a high-octane situation. She was exhausted, and sheâd been sick of Josh Steen before he died. If that was the truth about two months . . . wouldnât she be craving a man?
Girls werenât like men, though. They could go without it. He was ready to go down the gym and smash the hell out of some punchbag with frustration . . .
Look, Sam, if you touch this girl, youâre a dead man walking. You know what fucking her would do? It would give the cops a motive for aiding and abetting. He shook his head, and winced a little at the idea. Lisa Costello wasnât like that, she wasnât some easy lay, some one-night stand. Men did not forget a chick like her. Sam had dated seriously a few times in his life; various women, always pretty, always clever. Heâd blown it every time. They thought it was because he didnât like them; it was really because he didnât much like himself.
If Lisa was feeling the heat from the chase across the world, why wouldnât he be?
None of it was real. He had to get through.
She came out of the bathroom wearing his clothes, and she looked great in them. His T-shirt hung loose around her frame, like a short dress; her legs were toned and went on for ever. Under the T-shirtâs thin cotton he could make out her bra and the outline of his boxers. He felt himself stir.
âIâm gonna take a shower too.â
âI guess weâre sharing the bed,â she said.
âThereâs nowhere else. Not even enough floor. So yeah.â He tried to smile, ignore his desire. âPromise you wonât molest me in the night, huh?â
She grinned back. Damn, she was pretty, even with wet hair and no make-up. He wanted to take her into his arms and push her back on that bed.
âI left my dagger in Thailand,â Lisa said. âYouâre safe for now.â
He fled to the bathroom, before he stood there and got hard.
