FOURTEEN

UNDER FIRE

Caden was sick of being dragged around. Buck had yanked him all over like a rag doll, twice, and other goons he had the displeasure of meeting thought they could get away with it too. The truth was, they could. He wasn’t really a tough guy, being of average height and build, and he hadn’t known how to fight. That was changing and, if Luca’s offer was legit, Caden was turning into not-so-helpless anymore. Most of all, he was getting angry. Anger had a funny way of making punches land and weakish people suddenly stronger.

Caden was not going to let his family slip away from him again. He hadn’t wanted to leave them in the first place, and now, when he could literally see them, he wasn’t going to let anything get in his way. Even a much bigger, armed stranger. Half his brain told him this was stupid, and he shouldn’t go head-to-head with someone who felt as strong as Buck.

Caden cursed something very unchristianly and leaned back, turning into the stranger. He stepped between his legs and yanked his arm free while catching the stranger’s foot with his own. Caden reached for the gun, preparing to twist it free just like Yohanan showed him. He didn’t grab it in time. His head flew to one side as everything went black for a second.

Oh great.

He could see stars and taste blood. He heard his sunglasses fall to the ground and felt the stranger grab his shirt collar as he reeled. Without thinking, Caden drew his knee up into the man’s groin. That stopped the stranger, but just long enough to get angry himself. Caden tried to pull away but realized he couldn’t. Panic constricted his throat as his heartbeat struck his insides. The stranger yanked him close, and the gun now bore into his stomach.

Caden froze, knowing he could do nothing as he stared inches away from his attacker’s face. He blinked, and his constricted throat loosened. His attacker’s head tilted to one side, and he slowly smiled.

Caden smiled too and laughed. “Hey, Noam.”

Noam released Caden and quickly put away his gun, glancing over his shoulder. Caden snatched up his sunglasses and put them back on. “Nice hair.” Noam said in English.

“Thanks,” Caden said in Hebrew. “I did it myself.”

“I can tell.” Noam answered in Hebrew. “You really need to learn how to fight. You’re going to get yourself killed.”

Caden glared at him. Okay, maybe he wasn’t so capable yet. He rubbed his now throbbing jaw and spat the taste of blood from his mouth. His still-healing chin was bleeding a little now too. Great. Caden wiped it away and shot Noam a quick look. Noam grinned as his ridged stance eased back into his standard relaxed, nearly uninterested posture.

“Is Ellie here?” Caden asked. “Yohanan?”

Noam nodded, and Caden’s heart leapt as he quickly glanced around. “Not here, but with us. They’re back at the campus.” Caden cocked a brow. “They’re safe,” Noam whispered. “And unharmed.”

Caden nodded slowly as he ran a hand over his face.
