How the Quantitative Data were Analyzed

In this section, I present the quantitative analysis of Kikuchi and Sakai (2014). As I mentioned in the previous section, we used a retrospective panel design (De Vaus, 2001) using 12 different time points, asking participants to rate their level of motivation at these time points on the questionnaire. Figure 6.1 presents the change in mean from the students’ first year in April, when they started their junior high school (Apr. J1), to their third year in March in senior high school (Mar. S3). Based on the analysis of the changes in motivation, it was found that the level of participants’ motivation generally decreased from the end of the first year of junior high school (Mar. J1) to the beginning of the second year (Apr. J2), from the end of the third year of junior high school (Mar. J3) to the first year of senior high school (Apr. S1) and from the beginning of the first year of senior high school (Apr. S1) to the end of that school year (Mar. S1).
