Chapter 26

Wil was ready to climb the walls by the time Kate, pale and sweating, finally deigned to approach. It was small satisfaction that the detective looked like she was about to lose her lunch.

“Dr. Harker, would you like to tell me what you and the rest of the Scooby gang are doing here?”

Kate didn’t bother to hide her irritation, but Wil refused the bait. There were more important issues than her pride.

“We were looking for Drake. We think she’s been kidnapped.” Wil spoke as calmly as she could.

Kate looked at Wil with an unreadable her expression. “First she’s attacked, and now she’s kidnapped? Don’t you find that a little strange?” Kate asked.

“I find that terrifying, detective. The real question is what are you going to do about it? How are we going to find her?” Wil’s tone challenged the detective. “We have to find her,” Wil added, desolation seeping into her now shaky voice.

“It helps that the desk clerk’s statement pretty much absolves you three of this murder. You didn’t have time to kill the victim. Not to mention, you’d be drenched in blood right now.”

Kate paused for a moment before flipping open her notebook. “Now, why do you think she’s been kidnapped?”

“My neighbor saw Drake leave the house with her uncle and another man. Her uncle was staying here, so we came to find her. We found this instead.” Wil waved her hand toward the crime scene.

“What’s her uncle’s name, and why would he kidnap his own niece?”

“Robert Drake, and I have no idea,” Wil said.

Kate looked up sharply. “Did you say Robert Drake?”

“Yes, Robert Drake is my wife’s uncle,” Wil said, disturbed by the detective’s reaction.

Kate ran her hand through her already mussed hair. “Shit! Stay here.”

Wil watched as the detective walked over to the site commander. She could hear them talking.

“I’m taking these three to the station with me, Hank.”

“Are they under arrest?” he asked.

“Not yet, but I’m keeping my options open.”
