The hours went by slowly, the darkness never wavering within the underground cells; and Leona blinked when the door at the end of the hallway opened. Was it breakfast-time already? She felt as though she had hardly slept all night. She listened to the sound of the soldiers’ boots on the stone floor, but they didn’t halt outside Lyla’s cell as they normally did when bringing their meals. Instead, they carried on until they were outside the door to where Leona was confined. A key turned, and the door swung open. For a moment, Leona was blinded by the light of a lamp shining through the entrance, and she shielded her eyes.

‘On your feet,’ came a voice.

She glanced up, and saw the soldiers’ horns silhouetted in the lamplight.

‘What are you going to do to her?’ Lyla called out.

The soldiers ignored the Dragon Corps officer. Leona swung her legs off the mattress and pulled herself into an upright position, her back sore.

‘This way,’ said one of the Bullan.

‘Don’t you beasts hurt her,’ cried Lyla.

‘Shut your mouth, prisoner,’ said a soldier.

‘Or what?’ said Lyla. ‘I am awaiting execution – do you think your threats frighten me?’

Two Bullan entered Leona’s cell, gripped her arms, and then led her out into the hallway. They escorted her past Lyla’s cell, and Leona peered through the narrow barred slat in the door. Lyla was on her feet inside the cell, her face pressed up by the slat, and her eyes on Leona.

‘Be brave,’ said Lyla. ‘Give the bastards nothing.’

The two soldiers led Leona out through the door at the end of the hallway, and they entered the main part of the basement under the Dragon Palace, where regular wall lamps provided a dull glow to the passageways. They left the human-sized corridors and passed into an area where the ceilings were high enough and the entrances wide enough for dragons to come and go. Leona was taken into a cavernous hall, where three more Bullan were waiting. Next to the soldiers, Colonel Laimos was lying shackled on the stone floor, his face beaten and bloody.

‘Bring the prisoner over here,’ said a Bullan officer, gesturing to a chair positioned by a damp wall. ‘Secure her arms and legs.’

Leona was taken to the chair, then she was pushed down into it, and her wrists and ankles were tied to the wooden frame. She eyed the soldiers, but kept her mouth closed. The soldiers waited in silence, then the colonel groaned from the floor. Leona glanced down at him. She hadn’t wanted to look too closely at his face, but his cry of agony drew her gaze. His empty right eye socket was staring vacantly up at her, while his left eye was closed. His nose had been broken, and his chin was bruised and bleeding. Leona suppressed her feelings of sympathy and disgust, but allowed her anger to simmer through her body.

A sixth Bullan soldier entered the hall. ‘Her ladyship is on her way.’

The other soldiers stood to attention, and then the head of a huge black and white dragon appeared through an archway.
