I was on the floor in the same marble chamber, but the room was gray, lit only by errant embers that floated on a breeze I couldn’t feel. All around me were living shadows, and the whispers grew distinct.

“Hello?” I stood, at least I thought I did, but the concept of matter didn’t seem to work here. I was present, but my form was mutable, shifting and changing like the shadows around me.

“You’re safe here,” a male voice said. “Child of embers. Child of mine. You are safe here.”

“Who are you?”

“I am the first. The lonely. I am Ibris.”

Ibris…the first djinn? My subconscious conclusion that I was in the djinn city in the abyss was correct. “What is this place?”

“A sanctuary for those close to passing on.”

“I’m dying?”

“It is undecided.”

I wasn’t sure what that meant. “And Zepar?”

“The male who harbors the corruption in his soul must die.”

“Corruption?”

“Yes, child. Shaitan could not follow my children to this world, but his minions carried a tiny seed of his power with them, and your adversary is its host.”

“Wait, are you saying Zepar is possessed by Shaitan?”

“Not possessed. Corrupted. The need for power. The soul-aching desire for it has claimed him, just as it once did Shaitan. Because, my child, Shaitan is not one being; it is an idea, an ideal, and your adversary has become an important pawn in that. The corruption will always seek out the highest seat of power that it can, in whichever world it exists in.”

Maybe the fawda had wanted this world at one time, but corrupting Zepar had given them a new goal, a new, higher world to conquer. Heaven.

This wasn’t his fault. He’d been messed with, infected by corruption. By Shaitan. The parts I’d loved had been him. The pure parts of him before the corruption took over. Oh earth. I had to save him. He was trapped. “You’ve got to help him. You have to get this corruption out of him. Or tell me how to do it.”

Ibris was silent for several beats. “I’m sorry, child, but it is too late. The corruption has rooted too deep to be removed. It has become a part of him, woven into the fabric of his being.”

“So what? What do I do now?”

“You must twist the knife. Twist it deep until you reach his blackened heart.”

My chest ached as if my heart was being crushed. I hated the conflict inside me. Zepar was a murderer, a psycho, but…but he wasn’t. Not truly. He’d been driven insane by Shaitan’s influence.

“Time is running short,” Ibris said. “My influence in this world is weak, but I cannot allow this corruption to roam free. Once you end him, I will neutralize it, and once it is gone, the fawda will be no threat. But you must act fast and strike deep. You must pierce your adversary’s heart.”

“He wasn’t always an adversary.”

The voice and the whispers grew silent for a beat, and the embers floating around me flared brighter.
