Chapter 8
Ruari wanted an escape and he certainly got it, since his arrival didnât go unnoticed for very long. He awoke to a harried pounding on his door and his advisor Roisin stationed outside his room, looking rushed and overworked and delighted that the king had returned from his vacation to resume his usual duties. Ruari rested his head against the door frame and sighed, unwilling and unable to tell them it was only temporary.
He was put to work immediately, and Ruari found that the days passed quickly when one was sequestered in a study and buried behind a pile of paperwork taller than Corin. His hand cramped, but he continued to sign. His eyes grew bloodshot and strained but he continued to read. It was uncomfortable and dull and absolutely horrible, but Ruari found it hard to think of other things when faced with the daily upkeep of his kingdom.
Just like before, he thought as he scrawled his barely legible signature onto another page. Back when he lost track of time and Corbet until he was torn from the work and forced back into reality. What he wouldnât give to have that now.
âYour Majesty,â Gali called, breaking him from his trance but only just. âYou should take a break. Youâve been at this for hours.â
Ruari sighed, straightening his back only to hear a resounding of pops and cracks. âIâd love one, but I donât think Roisin would let me,â he groaned, looking at his guard with tired eyes. âIsnât that right, Roisin?â
âThat is correct, sire,â they chimed from their corner of the study, buried behind an equally massive stack of documents that needed to be read before they could be signed by his hand. âIf you leave that seat before that pile is completed, I will personally see to it that you never sleep again.â
âRoisin,â he whined, glaring at Gali when she laughed. âHow many times do I have to apologize for leaving? You know it wasnât my choice, donât you?â
They raised a single, delicate brow behind their spectacles, showing that they knew fully well and didnât care one bit. âGet back to work, Your Majesty,â they ordered, adding another thick bundle of documents to his ever-growing stack with a flick of their wrist and a burst of magic. âYouâve had your allotted time to whine.â
Ruari managed a rueful smile, looking at Gali standing gobsmacked in the corner. âThere you have it,â he sighed, stretching his wrist and preparing it for another bout of misery. âMaybe in a few more hours, Gali.â
âI suppose thatâs for the best, sire,â she muttered, looking at Roisin with wide eyes. She probably hadnât been exposed much to Roisinâs particular brand of tough love, but it only took once to learn to stay out of their way when they were determined. Ruari had been on the receiving end of their ire far too often in recent weeks from his whirlwind romance to the messy and painful fallout. Corbet had never gotten to meet Roisin in the course of his stay, but it was probably better that way.
