FOURTEEN

The persistence of the alarm is annoying. My wonderful dream is one I don’t want to wake from. I’ve just got to the part where Calix takes me in his arms, leans in close and… ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong. This time, much louder than the last few times. A present from Miranda. Something she had for years. The cheapest, tackiest, piece of junk which goes under the label of a mobile phone I’ve ever seen, plus the added humiliation of a keypad with raised, large numbers. She picked the alarm tone and I bet she scrolled through the small selection many times, settling on the most aggravating she could find, hidden deep in an ancient menu. The chimes of Big Ben. It doesn’t sound so loud when I chuck it inside the waste paper bin.

I won’t want to get back in bed now I’m up and out. The cold cotton sheets take a bit of time to get cosy in. At least the blankets aren’t of the itchy variety, like some in the coldest rooms on the top floor of Woe Hall, and I’m getting used to the candlewick bedspread. Goodness! Is that the time? A million thoughts run through my head. With no time for a boiling hot or a freezing cold shower, a cat lick and rapid toothbrush will have to do. I feel as if I’ve slept for a hundred years and I don't even remember the end of the night or coming back to this flat.

A quick change of underwear, fresh clothes and a roll of deodorant leaves me good to go! Snatching a familiar apple from the overflowing bowl, I grab my satchel and retrieve the grubby phone. Also known as a house brick. I really have to work out how to turn this alarm off before I get on the bus.

No sooner am I locking the door than a friendly face pops out from 9a.

“Allow me, dear. I have a contraption just like it. Have you forgotten? Robinson and Calix are dropping you off this morning, after a hearty breakfast. Come on inside, everything is ready.” Emily takes my phone and manages to disarm it in one fell swoop.

“I have my hair appointment in an hour,” I lamely protest. A poor attempt at being polite, something smells very appetising, despite my queasy tummy.

“You’ll get there in plenty of time. The men are upstairs chatting in the roof garden, up you go!”

With their heads almost touching, they appear to be in a deep and private conversation which abruptly stops when I appear.

“Morning, Wanda.” Calix is positively beaming this morning. His grin running from ear to ear, well… almost.

Robinson holds out his wrinkled hand, indicating for me to sit beside him at the long table.

“Egg and bacon butty, a large cup of our best tea and you’ll be as right as rain. I bet you had the best sleep you’ve had in a long time!”

“Stop teasing her, you two. I’m sure I did worse things after my first sampling of Jerome’s High Seas Rum.
