The drink fizzes in a rather appealing way, but it’s way too sweet for my tastes. I grimace and resist the urge to ask for a glass of water to help wash it down.

“Okay,” I say instead. “What happens now?”

Oberon smiles. “Now I give you your third task.”

I blink at him. Once. And then again. He’s suddenly blurry. “You mean furth tashk,” I say, slurring the words, and losing all concept of numbers.

“SHE’S DRUNK AS A SKUNK!” Pandora screeches, pointing a finger at me.

“Yes, dear, she is,” Oberon agrees easily, not even wincing this time at Pandora’s unfortunate volume. “Your third task is the hardest,” he tells me, “And to keep you from thinking up any more tricks I’ve given you a little something to muddle your mind.”

I scrub at my face, and try to focus on giving Oberon my best death glare. But a loud hiccup escapes and kinda ruins it. “Fine,” I say. “Watz I gotz ta do?”

“Empty every cell in Underworld Reformatory.”

“Oooh, that’s a tough one,” Mac says. “There’s gotta be at least what...two thousand inmates?”

I stagger away from Oberon, not wanting to hear anything more.

I’ve lost. There’s no way I can empty Underworld Reformatory, even if I wanted to. And I don’t want to. Letting loose a bunch of bloodthirsty supes is not my idea of fun...I look at Mac and Griff and Shauna and Kit. Shit. Letting loose a bunch of bloodthirsty supes is kind of my brand. I giggle.

Somehow my feet tangle beneath me. I trip and fly forward—right into Griff’s arms. Drunk and tired, I let myself sag against him. He gets an arm behind my knees and swings me up into his arms, cradling me like a baby. I gotta say—I don’t hate it. My head is so heavy and it feels so good to let it rest against Griff’s chest. I nuzzle him a little, purring even though I’m in my human form.

“Mavis,” Griff growls in a low voice.

“Mmmm,” I respond, as I stroke the warm skin covering his beautiful chest. “Muschles, mushles,” I sing-song, as my fingers wander across his chest. “Love the mushcly, mushcles of my mushcle man.”

Suddenly Shauna’s head is right next to mine as she joins in on singing, “Mushcles, mushcles!”

“Guys, are you having a sing-along without me?” Mac asks, looking sincerely worried.

“Join ush, Mac!” I invite warmly.

With a big grin, he draws in a breath—

Suddenly, I’m ripped out of Griff’s arms. A horrible fanged creature has me.

“If you so much as hum one more note, I will rip your throat out,” Tina snarls.

Her skin is so smooth and pretty. I reach out to stroke her cheek. “Wuv you Tina. And I’m shorry about Val. You must mish him, sho mush.” My eyes feel with tears as my mood shifts from euphoria to the depths of despair. “I mish Edie too. I mish her, my sishter.”

SLAP!

There’s a stinging pain and my head swings to the left.

SLAP!

The pain comes again, but this time on the other side.

I stare at Tina.
