CHAPTER 8
COHEN
The sound of voices pierced through the fog of pain. I listened closely to try to assess where I was. Last I remembered, weâd picked up Damari and we were in the midst of a car chase. As I tried to think it through, I heard Godricâs voice. âI need to check his wounds, but I hate to disturb him.â
Another voice spoke softly. âIt's best that you check them rather than them get infected, right? I mean, that's what happens on TV shows and stuff.â
Godric hummed as if he agreed. Like usual, I felt him getting closer to me. I wanted to see what was going on and figure out why he needed to check on me, so I opened my eyes. When I did, I found him hovering over me. He didn't jolt at my sudden awakening. Rather, he seemed happy to see me looking back at him.
âThere you are. You had me worried,â he whispered. âThis will likely hurt, but I need to take a look, okay?â
That was all the warning he gave me before he poked at my shoulder. Fire shot threw me at his touch. I nearly climbed out of my skin as my body bowed from where I was laying. I had a feeling I wasn't on a bed since there was so much bright light in the room. At the same time, it was soft enough to be mistaken for one. A couch I'd bet.
âEasy does it, Cohen. Let me see how itâs doing.â He pulled back the tape and gauze over my wound. âEverything still looks good. I've got pain medicine if you want to take some.â I shook my head as I tried to pull myself up.
He frowned but helped me get into a sitting position. âIâll be fine. I need to stay awake. How long have I been out?
Godric sat on the edge of the coffee table across from me. âYou slept through the night. It's still early morning. I just made some coffee.â
Damari leaned against the doorway of the kitchen, his eyes flicking back and forth between the two of us. I'm sure he was wondering what kind of protective duty we were when I get shot and it brings him down to one person.
It's not judgment I saw in his gaze. Instead, it looked like curiosity. Iâd have to ask Godric what that was about. I also needed to ask what happened when the two men were left alone while I was passed out.
Godric stood from the table, his large form marching into the kitchen. I knew without following his movement that he would be making me a cup of coffee and likely he'd be grabbing pills for me as well. He was always the type to nurse me when I was sick. A gunshot wound was worse than a man cold. I suspected this would be forced upon me whether I turned it away or not.
It was for the best, I'm sure. I just really hated not being part of the team.
