PART TWO

Cultivating the New Ecosystem

How the Blended Ecology?

CHAPTER 5

Awakening

The sprawling 3,468 square miles of Yellowstone National Park (YNP) expand into three states: Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. On March 1, 1872, it was established by the United States Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant as the first national park in the United States. The park contains incredible variations of wildlife species and unique geothermal features. It is a massive ecosystem featuring many interweaving networks of smaller habitats. The area is protected from hunting, livestock grazing, and resource development. 1

The Yellowstone ecosystem allows us to research complex natural interactions, supposedly undisturbed by human civilization. Across the largely colonized and urbanized United States, YNP offers us an endless supply of breathtaking vistas and natural landscapes.

However, not everything is as it seems in YNP. Humans have interfered and reengineered Yellowstone for most of the nearly 150 years it has been a state park. Some of our interventions have had a less-than-helpful impact on the natural processes and species, creating at some level an artificial ecosystem.
