Chapter 8

Maggie sighed, her head resting in the crook of Kraeven’s arm and neck, her hand splayed out across one of his silvery pecs. Despite laying in a bed of scratchy hay, she felt like she slept on a cloud of blissful peace.

What happened between them had been unexpected, to say the least. But it’d been hot, and she could see herself doing it all over again despite them being on two different sides of a conflict. Well, they were on the same side, he just didn’t know it, and she couldn’t tell him lest she risk her standing in the faction.

With a light sigh, Maggie eased away from Kraeven’s warmth, making sure not to disturb him from his light slumber. She needed to get away and report back to the faction, and she couldn’t do that with Kraeven watching her every move.

Rising to her feet, Maggie glanced around as she searched for her clothing. It didn’t take long for her to find and redress in her clothing.

Once she was fully dressed, she cast one last glance at Kraeven. She liked him like this. He looked peaceful, and the taut lines of his face were smoothed in sleep. She wanted to dive back into that pile of hay with him and sleep the day away, but she other duties needing her attention.

Spinning on a heel, Maggie left the underground barn behind as she climbed several flights of stairs to reach the faction’s meeting spot. If only she could have Kraeven fly her up there. Sometimes she wished she had wings as well. It would make her task of getting around the underground colony easier.

As she approached the faction meeting room from a rock corridor, she spotted her sign that Jaxon was inside. A green dot that most would miss unless they specifically looked for it, had been painted onto the rock face. It was smaller than the nail on her pinkie finger.

As Maggie walked up to the metal door, she rapped on it lightly with her knuckles. The door slid open, and she strode in before it shut behind her.

As her eyes adjusted to the brighter white lights in the room, she blinked a couple of times. The Aeci used green lights in their underground colony, so humans had replaced their home lights with bright yellow or white ones. It’d taken some time for her to grow used to the eerie green lighting of the Aeci colony, but now bright lights seemed strange to her eyes.

Sasha folded her arms across her chest as she arched a light eyebrow. “Someone saw you in the food hall.”

Oh, man. Which meant they saw her with Kraeven.

Maggie glanced over to Jaxon worried about the reaction of the group. Would they freak out about her interactions with Kraeven?

“Anything to tell?” Jaxon asked when Maggie remained silent.

“The Aeci I was spotted with was the same one who I saw before the first bombing, and, “she shrugged her shoulders with a sigh as she plopped the side of her waist against a chair armrest, “he was there at the second bombing.
