Trust and loyalty.

They mean something very different in my world.

To some, trust is talking to one neighbor about another behind their back. Trusting someone to care for your kid. Trusting someone to not fuck up your investment portfolio.

Loyalty is the other way around. Loyalty means you’ve got people at your back who will be there no matter how ugly or messy shit gets.

I like to know who has my back. Who will go to the ends of the earth for me. I want to know they’ll do anything for me. Even kill, if it came to that.

There are very few people I’d kill for.

But I would.

And I have.

I’m not a made man. It was my agreement with my dad when I married a Ricci for the sake of my family.

The things I’ve done are not because someone else ordered them. I did them because they fucking needed to be done.

Nine years ago, when Art decided Tessa was the one, she couldn’t get out from under the filth of her family. And that filth was dirtier than the scum of the earth. She was eighteen. Art was ten years her senior. They met at a seedy club on the wrong side of Seattle.

Their relationship was quick and intense. Tessa’s older brother owned the club that was purely a front for pimping women. He had plans for his littlest sister and they did not include Art Ramos unless he was a paying customer. She had no one and no way out of that life.

Tessa avoided his scum as long as she could, but when Art found her beaten, cut, and bruised because she refused to spread her legs so her brother could profit, that was it.

Art and I took care of him. We took care of his business partners too. And then burned his club to the ground. We did this so Tessa could rest easy for the rest of her life. Art did it for her, and I did it for him.

Art married her as soon as her bruises faded. He was already climbing the ladder in one of the most prestigious law firms in Seattle.

Art won’t cross me. I have his loyalty for what I did for him. In return, I know I can trust him with my life.

Can I trust Dr. Aria Dillon?

When the time comes, will she give me her loyalty?

She wanted an answer, but I made her wait. I showered off the soot from the call we worked in the early morning hours and she put herself together as best she could in her hungover condition.

Her antics last night amused me, but that doesn’t mean I’m not relieved she says it isn’t normal for her. I don’t like drunks and I don’t like people who lack discipline.

I’ve watched her. I was sure she wasn’t those things. From here on out, I’m holding her to her word that she’s not. I don’t want that for the mother of my children.

“Did you ever try to make it work with your wife?”

I run a hand through my damp hair and pull her ass closer to my hip.
