Chapter Fifteen
Octavia
It was the only chance to run that had presented itself and I sure as hell wasnât going to waste it. I did as Tormund demanded, giving his newly formed hive a literal new lease on life. After that, I stood back and watched as they frolicked in the sun. Running. Jumping. Chasing each other in a game of tag. But it didnât take long before their innocent play morphed into more adult escapades. Stripping off their clothing, they rolled in the grass, letting the sunâs rays kiss their skin as they writhed together. Licking. Nipping. Sucking. Fingering. Gyrating. There werenât partners, per se, but rather a mass of desire moving and grinding in clusters of pleasure.
While I followed them out into the yard to feel closer to freedom, I hung back a safe distance from the orgy. Minutes ticked by. At some point in the midst of all the moaning and rhythmic slapping sounds, I realized⦠none of them were paying any attention to me. They were so preoccupied rocking the casbah that nothing else mattered. Not even the chick who made it happen. (Not the sex part. I had nothing to do with that. I just contributed the spark that allowed them to make it an outdoor activity⦠to my great regret.)
Every impulse screamed for me to run. To sprint for the tree line and not slow down or stop no matter what. But these were vampires. I couldnât outrun them. And a mad dash would accomplish nothing more than drawing attention to me. Pulse pounding in my temples, my gaze swept the grounds. In the center of an overgrown rose garden was a wooden gazebo with chipping white paint. Not ten feet behind that waited the woods.
It couldnât look planned.
No one could think I had an agenda.
Hoping I was managing something that resembled a nonchalant facial expression, I strolled past a trio diving into a devilâs threesome with their limbs intertwined. For the life of me, I couldnât recall what a casual stride looked like. Was I walking too fast? Too slow? Heart hammering in my ribs, I feared one of them would glance up at me and know I was up to something. I didnât manage to exhale until I made it to the gazebo. There, I sat down on the bottom step, like that was my goal all along. Swallowing hard, I fought to steady my breathing.
Step one was done. I made it this far. Now, I just needed to find the courage to melt into the woods.
Tormund had his face buried between the thighs of a pretty brunette. He paused briefly, much to her pouting dismay, to pluck a hair from his tongue and check the time left in his hourglass. If I had to guess, no more than a half hour had passed. He wouldnât be seeking me out again quite yet. Just in case he felt the need to set eyes on me, I put my elbow on my knee and rested my chin in my hand like Iâd been waiting there for a good long while.
