Chapter 8

I sat in the overstuffed chair that was positioned near the fireplace and sipped on some hot tea. My parents had been going off for a good hour now about my supposed college education. I was becoming bored and wanted to go back to my room, but they refused to let this subject rest. Granted, I was about to graduate, and I was already eighteen, so it seemed the wisest course of action to be searching for a decent college to go to. There was only one college I really wanted to go to, but they’d never understand.

“Kendra are you even listening to me?” my dad asked.

His demeanor was stern, and I could feel the anger emanate from him. My mom sat back silently, listening to the exchange between us. For once, it would be nice if she’d take my side. She either always took his side or remained quiet. I was getting sick of living like this. The way they treated me only made me want to keep pursuing what I really wanted.

“Loud and clear, Dad.”

“You know… your mom and I just want to see you succeed in life. Not become some vagabond on the street.” He took a sip of his drink. Dad set it back on the table after he swallowed and stared back at me. “So, no more sitting around and moping. You are going to pick out three colleges and apply to them today. And I want to see proof that you did it.”

“No!” I jumped up, my chair toppling behind me. Mom let out a soft gasp, bringing her hand up to her mouth. Still, she kept quiet.

I’d never defied my parents, and it was a bit of a shock to even me that I did so now. But my anger was already at the peak. So many people at school could live their own lives. I even knew of a few who didn’t even plan on going to college after high school, so why did I?

My hands at my sides, I balled my fists as I held a staring match with my dad. My mom continued to stare at us with wide eyes. It was obvious she had expected me to either back down or say something to placate my dad. I was done doing that. Enough was enough. They’d had enough control over me. It was time for me to be my own person.

“Excuse me? You will do as you are told!” My dad rose to his full height, folding his arms on his chest. He narrowed his eyes. “Young lady— “

“No, I won’t! I’m so sick of this!” I grabbed my jacket and ran for the door. “I’m going to Mors Academy, and that’s my final decision!”

As I slammed the door, I had expected my mom to come running after me. I really didn’t want to continue this fight. My mom had chosen to stay silent in the matter. I stormed off and just kept walking. I didn’t dare look back to see if they were following me, so I had no idea if they’d even left the house.
