When Penny made her way back to her room, it was already pitch dark outside. She ran down the stairs, rummaged the brass key with the old-fashioned tassel out of her handbag—and stopped abruptly. A glimmer of light could be seen in the narrow gap under her bedroom door.

Strange. She hadn't turned on any lights when she had been here briefly at noon. Or had she?

She tiptoed up to the door, got down on her knees—and peered through the keyhole.

Jakub? From the looks of it, the janitor was busy rummaging through her dresser. Which was definitely not a maid's job.

Resolutely, she pushed down the door handle and thrust the door open. Jakub cringed with a hushed scream.

The next moment, however, he had already regained his composure. Calmly, he slid shut the drawer he had just disappeared into up to his elbows and gave Penny a wry smile. "No offense," he said, "I just wanted to make sure."

"That I keep my dresser in good order, or what?" Penny retorted. The curiosity of this man was really pathological.

He straightened up to his full height—which did not make a very imposing impression.

"Mrs. Lempra had many enemies," he announced. "In Vienna, even—and much further afield. And they may now be after Miss Miriam, too. I'm the only one in the house who can protect her! I'm just doing my duty!"

"Protect Miriam? From me?" asked Penny in disbelief.

Jakub narrowed his eyes. "Who's going to tell us that you're really a detective? That you didn't deliberately approach Miss Miriam to—" He faltered.

"To what?" asked Penny sharply. "To rob her? Murder her?"

The janitor stiffened. "You can never be too careful!" he proclaimed, already sounding far less confident in the hero's role he had ascribed to himself.

Penny pointed to her dresser. "And did you find any pertinent evidence in my underwear? That I'm a spy or even a murderer?"

He twisted the corners of his mouth, rubbing his pointed nose in embarrassment.

"I'll stay alert," he announced in lieu of an answer. And then he made off as fast as his short legs would carry him.
