Edwards popped in to talk to Kenzie again after seeing Phelps on his way. Kenzie shook her head.

“Is he going to be okay driving himself home?”

Edwards raised his brows. “I… assume so. Why? He’s not drunk.”

“That’s not the only thing that can make you a menace on the road. Someone who is so distressed, his world crashing down around him… you don’t think he’s going to be driving distracted? Or run himself off the road on purpose, in an attempt to harm himself?”

The detective sat on the corner of the table, looking down at Kenzie. “I honestly never thought of it. We deal with people all day long who are distressed and distracted. We can’t be expected to drive them all home or make sure they have someone else to drive them.”

“I just think… sometimes it would make sense to check. To give him a taxi voucher or have someone drop him off. Then he can come back for his car when he’s feeling more stable or send someone else to pick it up for him.”

“I’ll take it under advisement.” Edwards looked at the face of his phone. “What did you think? Find that interview enlightening?”

“It was intense. I’ve never seen something like that in real life before. Watching it on TV doesn’t really capture the… emotion and intensity, does it?”

“No. Even watching true crime, where you actually see the cops talking to suspects and hear them confess, it’s just not like being in the same room with them. Talking someone into telling you something they swore they would never reveal. Or being down the hall watching it as it happens,” he added, shrugging with one shoulder.

“Yeah.”

“I’ve got a crew over at the house, turning it over.”

“That was quick. I knew you were trying to get a warrant.”

“It’s not too hard when you identify it as the place where someone likely lived with a body for over a dozen years. Sharon Briggs may not be as famous as Elysse Allen, but people know her name now that we told them the identity of the remains that were discovered. And a name like that is good for opening doors. It’s quite the story, and people want to know how it could happen. How someone could get away with that, even during the missing person investigation.”

“How did he hide the body during the missing person investigation?”

“That’s something we’ll have to find out. Talk to the detective on the case and find out whether he went into the house. If so, did he go into every room? Did he go into the basement? Did he suspect anything or try to get a warrant to search the entire house? Sometimes… a missing person investigation isn’t that thorough. When it is an adult who appears to be voluntarily missing or has been reported missing before… I’ll admit that the force doesn’t put much effort into it. And why would they? Why waste resources on someone who is a repeat missing and will show up again in a day or a week?”

“But she didn’t show up again in a day or a week.
