Chapter 14
After I returned to the inn, I was exhausted both mentally and emotionally. It had been quite a thrill ride, and a vast improvement over the way I used to spend my evenings when I lived in Manhattan. As I dropped my bag down, and greeted Susan, I trudged up the stairs to my little hidey-hole. I thought back to my apartment, it was huge compared to this tiny room. It was a loft suite located in Greenwich Village. There wasn’t much I missed about the city. At first it was beautiful living in a place that felt so alive and bustling with life. That soon turned into stress as I fought my way through traffic every day and bumped shoulders with people in the subway.
Now I was living in Sandy Creek, having been faced with two murders and still wondering if the killer was on the loose. I felt safer back in the city than I did in this sleepy town. Though I notched that up to familiarity. When a person was new to a place, everything felt bigger than it was, everything felt colder than it actually was. The people of Sandy Creek had welcomed me with open arms, at least some of them did. Rachel’s face flashed in my mind.
When I came into my apartment, Bentley greeted me. It always surprised me how dogs would look so overjoyed to see their owner even if you had only stepped out for five minutes.
“Well, boy, I think we might have caught the killer.”
He leaned his head to one side, giving me that I’m confused look.
“Let’s get you some food.”
As I scooped up his dish and lugged his bag of food onto the counter, I gazed out into the night. The moon was now clear. Clouds had moved, releasing its light to shine over Sandy Creek. The rear of the inn backed onto a thick tree line. It was part of Jackson Forest, which surrounded the entire town. I had only diverted my eyes for a few seconds to scoop a few cups of dried kibble into his bowl when I looked up to see a figure standing in my yard. They weren’t entirely visible but I could clearly make out their silhouette. I dropped the scooper and kibble went everywhere. I squeezed my eyes shut, and then opened them. When I did, the figure was gone.
I felt a chill come over me. Could it have been the killer? There was only one way into the backyard and that was through the forest. Whoever that was, had definitely gone out of their way. But for what?
I grabbed the phone that connected with the downstairs.
“Susan, do you think you can stay overnight?”
“Uh. What? I was planning on leaving in thirty minutes.”
“I know. I know. But I have this really bad headache coming on, and if the guests need anything I won’t be able to attend to them. I will pay you double.”
“Triple,” she retorted.
I shook my head.
“Fine. Triple.”
“Done,” she said.
“And Susan, can you lock all the doors?”
“Will do.
