Take book off shelf. Shake book to see if anything is inside. Page through book looking for any secret messages. Check book's condition: Does it have its dust jacket? Is it a first or signed edition? Enter data into form on phone. Rinse and repeat.

For the last two hours, Ava had been examining DR's books. The first part of the process -- the shaking and hunting for secret messages related to her sleuthing activities. The rest fell under the appraisal process.

So far, Ava hadn't found anything hidden inside DR's books nor any messages written in the margins. However, as there were shelves and shelves of books left to catalogue, hope sprang eternal.

Still hungry and wishing she had bought two crepes, Ava went to the kitchen and made herself a coffee using DR's fancy espresso machine. Hunting through the kitchen cupboards, she found a porcelain cup and saucer from Hermes, identical to the one at the wine shop.

DR did have expensive tastes.

Coffee in hand, Ava wandered around the apartment picking up things and putting them down. Nothing she saw gave her any insight into what was going on.

Ava finished her coffee and went back to the bookshelves. She climbed up the ladder, grabbed an armful of books and carried them into a small alcove between the kitchen and the living room. She piled the books up on a table. She chose a playlist from her phone, put her ear buds in her ears and began to work.

After she finished the books, she returned to the living room and climbed up the ladder again, listening to one of her favorite songs.

Suddenly, she sensed a presence.

Someone else was in the room with her.

Startled, she swung around to see who it was and lost her balance. The phrase "it happened so fast" ran through her mind as she fell. She hit the floor hard, and everything went dark.
