With its high ceilings and tall windows, the white Victorian house at the edge of the village was cool and pleasant despite a morning sun that was already shimmering the sidewalks outside with thermal waves. Ellen Luft heard the newspaper rustle across the table as her son finished the sports section and lifted her head from her own breakfast. “More milk, Peter?”

“No thanks, Mom.”

The red-haired youth looked at his lovely, unworldly mother with something close to despair. The Naughton women had always kept themselves isolated from the rest of the village, and while this had worked to their benefit in some ways, in others it had given them a false sense of security, and he couldn’t seem to get through to his mother and aunts an appreciation of their present danger. He sighed and tried again.

“Mom?”

Ellen smiled at the sigh. “Poor old Peter! All the weight of the world on your shoulders. You mustn’t worry so, darling. Clayton Gladwell was murdered by someone down in New York. Depend upon it. The police will only be interested in that. No one will care a fig about some old women living way up here in Dowling.”

“But if you could just make Aunt Nick think before she blurts things out!”

“I try, Peter. You know I do. But Nicky—of the three sisters, Penny might have had the reputation for smart-mouthing, but Nicky was always the outspoken one.”

“And Grandma Dolly the go-along-with-anything one,” the boy said bitterly.

“Now, Peter,” said his mother, half in warning, half in jest, “you mustn’t speak meanly of the dead.”

“Dead? Who’s dead?” asked Nichole Naughton from the other end of the breakfast table. She turned her ancient beaked head to her niece and grandnephew and strained to hear. “Did someone else die?”
