Chapter Nineteen

The news of the blonde’s true identity hit me like a ton of bricks. Very expensive bricks, based on how she now looked.

Since I had used Honey’s dream spell just recently, the girl’s face was fresh in my mind, as if I’d just been chatting with her, and I had no doubt at all it had been Keely who was in my row.

I supposed there was an element of logic to her attending the auction. She was selling off the property, and perhaps wanted to know what price she would be receiving for the items in the Weatherly estate she wasn’t interested in. Maybe she’d just wanted to make sure that Madeline’s company was running things well.

But why the massive change in appearance, and which version of Keely was the real one? Was she the mousy girl you wouldn’t look at twice, or was she the blonde bombshell who had just passed us on the steps?

This also raised numerous questions about her phone conversation, some of which were even more sinister now that I knew who she was. Perhaps I was jumping to conclusions, but some of the things I’d heard from her end of the conversation suddenly had me wondering if whoever she was talking to might have been involved with Madeline’s murder. Could whoever Keely was talking to have been the same person I overheard Madeline arguing with?

I wasn’t sure if the timeline would work, because Keely had mentioned that this mystery phone call had caused an argument between her and Madeline. If that was the case, Keely could have quite possibly been the last person to see Madeline alive. Or the argument could have happened much earlier and I was trying to squish together puzzle pieces that weren’t meant to fit.

If Keely had been the last one to see Madeline alive, however, it meant she might know who else had been around, or who could have had motive, like the person on the phone.

It could also mean that Keely was the one who had killed Madeline.

That last notion swirled around in my mind. The police had spoken to her … how many times did she say? Three times. That was a lot of conversation for someone who was just being asked casual questions. But she was also here alone, without a lawyer—unless she was meeting one inside—which seemed to indicate she wasn’t threatened by the questioning, merely annoyed.

That didn’t mean she was innocent, of course, but it did suggest she didn’t feel like she had any reason to worry.

Part of me wished I could care that little about what the police thought about me and that things like questions and fingerprints didn’t bother me in the slightest. But they did.

Instead of saying any of this to Rich, I said, “I guess this means the police already knew the stuff you told me last night.”

“Of course they did. They know where to look, to follow the crumbs left behind. Talking to Keely would only be a logical step, since setting up the sale and hiring Madeline had all been her idea.
