15 New Evidence

An hour later, Dotty called back with the name of an Irish law firm. One of its lawyers was already en route to the police station.

Lana thanked her boss profusely before calling Kitty to share the good news.

“Thank goodness! Jeremy really needs a lawyer now. The police want to officially arrest him.”

“What do you mean?” Lana snapped. She had honestly thought the police would have realized that it was all a misunderstanding by now. “They’ve only had him in custody for a few hours. What reason do they have for arresting him?”

“When they interviewed Guy’s fellow reporters at the Dublin Chronicle, they learned more about the article he was writing about Firehouse Brewery. They won’t tell me what they discovered, but whatever it is, it gave the police reason to believe that Guy included me in his article in order to disgrace me, as a way of hurting Jeremy. They think Jeremy killed Guy to prevent him from finishing the article.”

Lana felt her blood pressure rising. “Are you kidding me? What lies could Guy have possibly made up that would have ruined your career? We have to find out more about this article. I am going to go to his newspaper’s office and see if they will share it with me.”

“I appreciate your offer, but I seriously doubt that they will. Jeremy’s lawyer should be able to gain access to the information, whatever it is.”

“That may be, but I doubt he will be able to let you read it. Especially if the newspaper or police claim the information is confidential,” Lana countered.

“But you are leading a tour—you can’t walk away from your clients! Don’t risk losing your job for Jeremy. Arranging a good lawyer for him is already a huge step forward.”

“Jeremy has gotten me out of so many jams. And it’s because of my article that he lost his job at the Seattle Chronicle all those years ago. I can’t abandon him. Besides, Randy can cover today’s tours.”

“Thank you, Lana. Both Jeremy and I are grateful for your help,” Kitty said, her voice trembling. “What I don’t understand is why the police are so focused on Jeremy. They should be out looking for more suspects. Anyone at the pub could have killed him!”

“Technically, you are right,” Lana said carefully. “But I don’t see how a stranger could have done it. It must have been one of the other group members.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Because of the murder weapon,” she said gently, knowing Kitty’s grief and anger were making it difficult for her to think clearly. “What are the odds that a stranger would have known that there was a heavy statue in one of our bags? Randy and I stashed them under that table as soon as we arrived, and no one took out their souvenirs while we were in the pub.”

Kitty sighed deeply into the phone. “I guess the chances of a stranger knowing about it were slim to none. That doesn’t mean that Jeremy did it!”

“You are right, he didn’t do this.
