After Fred and I had finished up, I decided it was high time for Barkley and me to have some one-on-one time. Since I’d started dating Ethan, we didn’t get much time by ourselves like we were used to. I simply wasn’t ready to give up this part of my life—not yet and maybe not ever. Even if Ethan and I took our relationship to the next level, I’d need to find some moments to share with just me and my faithful companion.

As fate would have it, as I loaded Barkley and some of his toys up, Ethan called.

“Hey.”

“Hi, beautiful. How did the meeting with Fred go?”

I put my car in drive and turned right onto the road. “Um, good, I guess. Fred wants to delve into where the copperhead could have come from.”

“It’s a smart idea. You can’t find those kinds of snakes in your backyard around here.”

Barkley could hear Ethan’s voice, and he let out a single bark as if to say hello.

“Sounds like you and Barkley are driving somewhere.”

“Yeah, I’m taking him to a dog park we haven’t been to lately.”

“Just the two of you, or is Milly going with you?”

“No, just me and Barkley.”

“So, what did Norman think about Milly?”

“He’s all about some Milly. What about her?”

“Milly wants to proceed with caution. But I can tell she’s more excited than she lets on.”

“With her record of duds, it’s understandable.”

“That’s true,” I said, laughing.

“I need to get back in. You and Barkley have fun.”

“We will.”

“I know. Call me later?”

“Of course, I’ll call you later. I’m hoping to have some sort of update on the case,” I added. “I’ll need my assistant.”

“Assistant?”

“Yes, do you have a problem with just being my assistant, Dr. Ethan?”

“It’s not a problem as long as I’m spending time with you.” He chuckled. “Olivia…I…nevermind”

I felt a little flutter in my belly. Was it just my imagination, or was he about to say those three big words?

The late afternoon sun hung lazily in the sky as we pulled up to the dog park. The warm rays cast a radiant hue across the vibrant green landscape.

We followed a winding trail through the woods, appreciating the scent of pine and wildflowers with each breeze.

Barkley’s tail wagged like a metronome, setting the rhythm for our little adventure ahead. As we meandered along the pine-needled trail, the distant sounds of joyful barking and playful yips reached our ears, a cheerful symphony of canine delight.

We passed by a couple of families participating in dog events, including an exuberant game of fetch. A group of owners stood together, watching their dogs weaving through cones and leaping over.

Soon, the trail opened up, revealing the sprawling dog park ahead. Colorful picnic baskets, dog toys, and water bowls speckled the scene, and the air buzzed with the happy chatter of dog owners.

Barkley was off like a rocket, dashing toward a group of dogs engaged in a spirited game of tag. I watched him join the fray, his boundless energy and enthusiasm fitting right in with the canine camaraderie.
