Chapter Twenty-Eight
A-232
As soon as Priscilla got into 205 the following morningânoting that Susie had yet to arrive and was, as usual, lateâshe telephoned Percy Hoskins. She told him what had happened and what she had learned from her encounter with the Abrahims.
âA-what?â Percy appeared to be having trouble understanding what she was telling him.
âA-232.â She spoke with an authority designed to showcase what little knowledge she had. âAccording to Aziz Abrahim, Amirâs brother, itâs a deadly nerve agent developed by the KGBâthatâs Russian intelligence in case you didnât know.â
âI know what the KGB is,â Percy said irritably. âAre they saying the Russians poisoned Amir?â
âThey donât think it was Russians,â Priscilla amended.
âThen who?â
âThe Abrahims were kind of vague about that. But they did say they want the police to find his killer.â
That gave Percy pause on the other end of the line. âOkay, the Russians didnât kill Amir, but they might know who did. Is that it?â
âSomething like that.â Priscillaâs sense of authority was quickly slipping away.
âHave they gone to the police with what they know?â
âThey donât want to talk to the police,â Priscilla said. âI think thatâs why they got me involved.â
âSo you can talk to them?â
âNot quite. I tell you, and you can write a story, quoting unnamed sources, and that story will then force a police investigation.â
âThatâs why they kidnapped you?â
âNot the only reason. The father wants me to marry Amirâs brother, Aziz.â
More pausing on Percyâs part. âWhy would they want you to marry him?â
âApparently Amir told his family that he had planned to marry me, and they are sworn to fulfill that promise.â
âDid Amir ask you to marry him?â
âNo.â
âThis doesnât make any sense.â
âNo, it doesnât. And it may not have been me Amir was talking about when he talked to his family about marrying.â
âYou donât mean he was thinking of marrying Princess Margaret?â
âThatâs what crossed my mind. Never mind that sheâs already married. But then Aziz didnât seem to know anything about his brotherâs involvement with her.â
âOkay, let me get on this toxic A-232 thing.â
âCan you write a story about it?â
âDefinitely. Where did you leave it with the Abrahims?â
âAziz said he would be in touch.â
âAre you going to marry him?â
Priscilla decided to hold off an immediate answer, anxious to see how heâd react.
âPriscilla.â Was that a touch of concern in Percyâs voice? âAre you going to marry this bloke?â
âHeâs very rich, he says, and sort of attractive in an older-man kind of way. Maybe a trifle short for me. If I did marry him, would you be jealous?â
âI would be except youâre going to marry me,â Percy said with the sort of confidence guaranteed to annoy her.
âYouâre tall enough, I suppose,â Priscilla ventured, âbut you donât have any money, and you drink too much.â
âHowever, I am irresistible.â
âNo, youâre not. Besides, Iâm not going to marry anyone.â
âHa! Thatâs what you think.â
âGoodbye, Percy,â Priscilla said, hanging up as the second phone on her desk began to ring.
She took a couple of deep breaths, debating whether to answer it. When she did, she was immediately sorry.
