William sat at his desk in the library, gazing out the window, trying to convince himself that attempting to keep Amy from involving herself in this newest murder was futile. As much as he hated the idea, the only thing to be done was for him to join her.

They’d been a very good team in prior murders. Plus, it would be a way for him to protect her from any danger and make sure she didn’t overtax herself.

As he sat there, he decided to put off his scheduled tour of a new factory in Bristol that he was considering investing money into and instead, spend the time with Amy going over all the information she had gathered—and of course had refused to admit to him before now—to see if they could come up with a solution to the two murders.

Amy arrived at the library looking much better than when he left her earlier. “I see the short rest has restored you.”

“Yes. I do feel a lot better.” She looked at the desk where he had a piece of paper with writing on it. “What are you doing?”

“I have decided to help you figure out these murders so you can concentrate on the baby.”

She offered him a bright smile. “Indeed.”

“Yes. As we learned before, two heads are better than one. The main problem I see is we need connections to people known to both Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Devon.”

Amy moved to stand behind him, staring at the paper. “What is this?”

“My list of suspects.”

“There is only one name on there.”

He huffed. “I’m just getting started.” He motioned to the chair in front of the desk. “Why don’t you take a seat, and we’ll make a list.”

Amy tapped her lips with her index finger. “First, of course, Mr. Fleming.”

“For the first murder or the second?”

“If Mrs. Devon was his wife’s cousin, then surely he knew her. Also, he was probably aware of the lawsuit regarding the necklace. I’m thinking he should go on both lists.”

“Who do you have for the first murder?” William asked.

“Mr. Fleming and Mrs. Devon—who is now dead. I also added Mrs. Garfield only because she did find the body and the inept detectives seemed to think she was guilty at one time. To my way of thinking, it was merely one of those being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

William had been writing while Amy spoke. “As for Mrs. Devon, do we want to keep her on the list for the first murder?”

“Yes. Until we have reason to take her off, it is quite possible she killed Mrs. Fleming for the necklace and then someone killed her for the necklace.”

“Mr. Fleming?”

“Possibly. Or someone who we haven’t discovered yet. Husband, you are making me feel a tad foolish. These are things I should already have decided. I would never have let these things become so convoluted were I writing this as a book.” She shook her head. “That is why I put my book aside. My mother-to-be brain is not functioning properly.
