Honeysuckle hung heavy on the trellis in front of the veranda of the Larrick home, a white cottage, in need of paint, on the northern outskirts of Las Palmas. Honeysuckle, the familiar sight and smell of it, made this a sanctuary in an Ultima Thule where narcotic flowers bloomed at midnight and were dangerous to touch.

Only between the steps and the front door did the moonlight have a clear pathway, reaching almost to the feet of Mallory Winters and Bert Larrick, where they stood just inside the dimly lighted living room. Fred, behind one of the pillars, was in shadow but he had made a peephole in the vines through which he could see into the street.

“Bert”—it was a whisper—“don’t go.”

“Don’t go? Why, Mallory, I’ve got to. I can’t leave Fred in the lurch. Don’t worry—”

“Call the sheriff. Have him come and take Fred to that doctor’s house.”

“I can’t do that. It would look like I was afraid.”

“It wouldn’t. And Fred hasn’t any right to ask you to go with him. He hasn’t told you—”

“Say there, Bert!” Fred called softly. “How about breaking that up and coming on? It’s getting late.”

“Just a minute.” There was no one in the doorway of the living room. “What’s the real reason you don’t want me to go, Mallory? Tell me. Is it because …?”
