The interview with Chad was lasting longer than Ramirez had expected. It was only early afternoon, but the detective felt like he had already worked three days straight. Truth be told, Ramirez hadn’t had a good night sleep since Sam quit the force. Even though Chief Bannon had pretty much relegated him to a desk jockey, Sam was always an extra detective when they needed him. And honestly, the fact that he had handled so much of the paperwork had made every detective’s job easier.

Chad tapped Ramirez’s desk, snapping him back to the present.

“You cost me a half day of filming, but no hard feelings,” Chad said. “Everyone’s got a job to do. Much respect. Also, do you know where I can get a good iced mocha latte around here?”

“Get out,” Ramirez muttered.

Chad put his hands together in prayer and bowed to Ramirez before walking away.

God, I can’t wait until this movie leaves town, he thought.

Even before the murder, the movie was spreading the already thin police force even thinner. Between security details, extra patrolling, and traffic control, everyone on the force was pulling double and even triple shifts.

Ramirez grinned, realizing that, for the first time in his life, Sam actually had good timing. He had pulled out right before things went crazy.

He wondered how it was going in Dallas. Ramirez hoped Sam would find something useful in Dallas. As much as he hated having a private detective work the case with him, it was nice having someone else handle a lot of the leg work that took up lots of time with little chance of a payout.

Ramirez pushed back his chair and stood up. He grabbed his coffee cup and headed for the coffee machine, and had just begun to pour some of the brown swill when Bannon called him into his office.

“What’s up?” Ramirez asked upon entering the police chief’s office.

“I hear tell you’re working with Lawson,” Bannon snapped.

“Well, he was hired to work the same case so we’re combining resources.”

“May I remind you that he is no longer a member of this police force? And this murder investigation is a police matter.”

“Yes, sir,” Ramirez muttered, hoping Bannon would just let it go at that.

“All that said, we may have a problem,” Bannon said. “Another sex worker has gone missing.”

Ramirez’s stomach dropped. That fit Mullen’s victimology.

“Do you think?” he started to ask. But Bannon cut him off before he could finish.

“We don’t know what it is. Not yet. But we need to treat it like it could be.”

Ramirez nodded.

“I’m assigning it to Hicks and Awbrey,” Bannon said. “For now. You’ve got this movie murder case going on. But if it turns into something, I’m gonna need to bring you in. You understand?”

“Yes, sir.”

“And Ramirez. I don’t think I need to tell you that you can’t mutter a word of this to Lawson. Not yet.”

“But Chief. He needs to know. Doctor Davenport needs to know. They received a death threat.”

“We’ve already got them under surveillance and Davenport is getting escorted to and from work.
