PARIS WAS DELIGHTED FROM THE second she walked through the front door. She couldnât stop exclaiming over the fancy tile, ornate crown moldings and the out-of-control decorations that practically screamed the Grimlocks were a family with endless money at their disposal.
âThis place is amazing,â Paris enthused as I led her toward the drink cart.
Alvis wasnât what I expected. He was blond, had huge cheeks and bright blue eyes. He looked nothing like his mother.
âHello.â Redmond, who was sitting on the floor in front of Lilyâs carrier, abandoned her and switched his attention to the toddler. âYou must be Alvis.â
The boy wasnât exactly shy, but his eyes were full of suspicion when they landed on Redmond. âNo,â he announced, extending a finger in Redmondâs direction. His reaction was enough to have everyone laughing.
âHe figured you out, Redmond,â Aisling offered. She looked to be in a good mood, her skin practically glowing, and I couldnât help but wonder if sheâd done something to her fatherâs car. She always looked her best when she got to torture one of her male relatives.
âDonât listen to her,â Redmond said to Alvis. âShe doesnât know what sheâs talking about. I happen to be tons of fun.â
Alvis narrowed his eyes. âNo,â he repeated.
Paris looked embarrassed by her sonâs reaction. âIâm sorry. Thatâs his favorite word. He only knows ten of them and thatâs the one he lets loose the most.â
âDonât worry.â Aisling smiled kindly at the boy as she planted herself on the settee. âI expect Lily will be the same way when she starts talking.â
âI expect Lilyâs favorite word is going to be âmine,ââ Cormack countered, grinning at the little boy as Alvisâs gaze switched to him. âHey, buddy. If you come over here, I have some licorice.â
Braden made an exaggerated face. âThatâs the offer of perverts the world over, Dad. You canât say things like that.â
Cormack balked. âI didnât mean ... .â He trailed off. âHuh. Now that you mention it, that probably wasnât the right thing to say.â
âOh, you think?â
Cormack made a big show of ignoring Braden and focusing on Alvis. âSorry about that, buddy. Youâre a cute little thing, huh?â
âHe doesnât look like you,â Redmond announced. He almost looked disappointed. âIs that what your husband looks like?â
âNot that much.â Paris was rueful. âI was blond when I was a kid. Iâm guessing his hair will darken as he ages.â
âI think heâs cute as a blond.â Aisling smiled at the boy, who had been glued to his motherâs side until he finally focused on her. Then, out of nowhere, he took a step in her direction. The smile he graced her with was adorable.
âOh, he likes you.â Paris beamed at her son as she watched him toddle toward Aisling. âIt usually takes him an hour or so to warm up to new people, but he already likes you.â
If Aisling was surprised, she didnât show it. Instead, she waited for him to get close and then hoisted him up on the settee so he could get comfortable next to her.
