Fifteen

We dropped Luna at the park when we finished. My car was parked nearby, so it made sense to separate from Braden there.

“You’ve been quiet,” he noted as he stood next to the car with me. “Are you okay?”

I nodded and forced a smile I didn’t feel. “I’m fine.” Except for the fact that I keep seeing your dead mother everywhere, I added silently. “Don’t worry about me.”

“Worry goes with the territory. It’s kind of like you worrying about Luna, even though she can clearly take care of herself.”

I glanced over his shoulder, back to the park, and smiled when I saw Luna standing on a table in front of the others, holding court. “I can’t help it. She pushes every button I have. I don’t like thinking about her living on the street.”

“She says she doesn’t live on the street.”

“Yeah, but ... squatting in an empty building isn’t much better.”

Braden brushed my hair from my face. “You can’t force her to do what she doesn’t want to do. She’s headstrong.”

“She is.”

“She reminds me of Aisling, but my sister is so soft that she wouldn’t last one night on the street.”

“I think you’re all too soft for that.” I laughed at his hangdog expression. “Your father has spoiled you rotten. All of you.”

“He spoils Aisling the most.”

“He spoils you too. It’s fine, though. In an ideal world, nobody would have to live on the street.” I studied Luna a moment longer. “She’s so powerful and mouthy. I love her. I just want to help.”

“People have to be open to the notion of help,” Braden pointed out. “You can’t force her.”

“I guess.” Deep down, I knew he was speaking the truth. Still, I couldn’t shake the idea of helping her. “I’ll figure something out. As for the rest of the day, I need to head back to Belle Isle and make sure the furries haven’t gotten too out of control.”

“Yeah, I really want to stop out there and see them in action. Hopefully I will get some time.”

“They’re pretty innocuous. I mean ... I know some of them turn this into a sexual thing, but I haven’t seen that so far. They’re just having a good time.”

“I still want to see them.”

“Stop out whenever you have time.” I kissed him. “I have to go. I’ll see you later. Thanks for the backup on the gate.”

“I’m always thrilled to serve as your backup.”

“Just not my sidekick, right?”

He chuckled. “I’m fine with that too.” He hugged me and then waved at my grandfather in the passenger seat. “If you need me, don’t hesitate to call.”

“Don’t I always?”

He shook his head. “Sometimes you take off with my sister ... or crazy mages ... or that pink-haired mouth over there. I always want to be your backup. You’ll break my heart if you cut me out.”

Oh, that was manipulative ... and kind of cute. “Well, the most taxing thing I expect to handle this afternoon is furries. I think I’ll be fine.”

“Keep it that way.”
