CHAPTER 29
By the time Mike and I ended up at Cal and Virginiaâs condo, both of us were exhausted from worry and upset. I frowned in concern when I saw Sweet Pea slip and lose her footing when she greeted us. I picked her up and was amazed that she seemed so light, like sheâd lost some weight. Sweet Pea was aging. I kissed her furry cheek and carried her inside, holding her tight to me. I greeted Maggie and David. Theyâd be flying back to Las Vegas the day after tomorrow.
It was nice for the six adults to sit together and relax with a cocktail while Jack was quietly engrossed in playing a video game on the TV screen. Cal, Mike, and I began to update the others about what was happening with Angela.
âI canât believe that theyâre making her spend the night in jail!â exclaimed Virginia.
âI agree,â said Maggie. âThat doesnât seem right. Were the other people involved going to spend the night in jail too, or is it just Angela?â
I shrugged, and Mike said, âHarryâs lawyer was fighting that when I left the station earlier, so who knows?â
âIâll be happy when Harry gets payback for trying to get Angela involved in all that heâs been doing!â protested Virginia. âI donât want him to get away with it just because he has a fancy lawyer.â
âWell, all you have to do is discover where heâs hidden the rest of the stolen property,â I said in a teasing manner, patting her hand.
âYou mean if all the stolen items can be found and tied back to Harry, Angela will be free from it all?â Maggie asked.
âExactly. Itâs that simple; yet, we have no idea where it could be hidden since the police have already searched Harryâs house, and they canât find anything,â I sighed.
âIt has to be somewhere. The question is where?â David said.
âMama?â Jack said as he turned to face us.
âYes, sweetheart, what is it?â
âWhat are you looking for?â
âAll the stolen items that were taken in the recent robberies around town,â I answered.
âDo you mean all that stuff that Harry has stolen?â
âYes. Why?â
Jack remained quiet.
âDo you know where it is?â I asked.
Never one to expand his words, he replied, âYup,â
Astonished, we all stared at him until Mike asked, âWhere is it, Jack?â
âItâs in the doghouse,â he said casually.
âIf I remember correctly, Harry doesnât have a dog because heâs allergic to them. Are you sure, Jack?â I asked.
âYup, Iâm sure. Itâs in the doghouse.â
âHow do you know that, Jack?â asked Maggie.
âWhen I heard you were talking about it, the answer came to me, and the voice is never wrong,â he stated as a simple fact.
We looked at each other in amazement. Finally, Mike excused himself to call Coyote. For nearly an hour, we waited on pins and needles until we heard Mikeâs phone ring. We watched his face crumble with the news. âThereâs no doghouse on Harryâs property. Sorry, Jack, I guess the voice was wrong this time.â
Jack frowned. âNo, Daddy, the voice is right.
